It was The Atrocity Archives by Charles Stross.  Someone had recommended it to me a while back.  I generally prefer to read physical books, but the only format my local library had this particular book in was on CD.  So I checked it out that way and was listening in my car and unfortunately one of the discs was scratched.  It was definitely annoying since I missed part of the narrative, but it was an interesting sound so I figured for all the aggravation I may as well sample it and get something useful out of it.

Nice use of the scratched CD!  Not sure if you've heard of Oval before but he was one of the pioneers of glitch and his early material is all scratched CDs.  Really great stuff!

I've heard of Oval and actually have a few of his albums, but I haven't listened to them much.  Perhaps I need to remedy that.

I like the pace of this. That skipping CD sounds cool. Nice layered guitars. Bassline does its role very well.

I like the backstory of that track. The flanger effect, the guitar and bass create a good sonic background. Is that some singing in the background? I like that you can hear some of the voice reading towards the end. Fun concept!

Thanks!  I sampled that skipping CD a little while ago and I was waiting for the right time to use it.  I liked the sound world that was created here but felt like it needed a little something more and the CD sample seemed like it fit the bill.

Yeah there's a little bit of singing in there.  No words, I just wanted a little bit of that vocal texture.  So basically just some "Ahhhh's."

I sampled that skipping CD a little while ago and I was waiting for the right time to use it. I love little artefacts, as you know. So, you get my biggest OK, for importing this skipping sample into the track, which, as always, is a wonderful psychedelic journey into a new world with little creatures and lovely comfortable places to fall into sleep or just to eat more mushrooms.

Yeah, I'm a fan of artifacts and interesting sounds, too.  Anytime I encounter a strange or interesting sound out in the world my first thought is I need to get a sample of that.  I've turned my phone into a makeshift field recorder and I've got a little bit of a sound sample library going on in it.  Also thanks for the imagery of little creatures sleeping comfortably and eating mushrooms.  I like that.

I'm a believer in happy accidents.  It probably would have sounded worse if I tried to cut it up myself.  I just let it do it's thing and thought it sounded pretty cool.

This feels like part of an anthem for 2020. Somehow very pretty though, so I guess it represents the beautiful flaws in 2020.

Very nice melancholy instrumental.  Really dig the cello lines with that flangey beat.  The skippy cd was a nice touch.  Great way to make use of that disc.

I try to find the upside in everything if possible.  If it's going to mess up my book listening experience, then it's going to go to use in a song, dang it.

Very twisted sound (twisted in a good way). Books on tape on CD jumped into my head reading your description.  Maybe moving books to CDs was an evolutionary step too far and it angered the literary gods. Cool intro effect and beat.

Yeah.  I'm old fashioned and I honestly prefer my books as physical books, but when utilizing the library sometimes I have to take whatever media they have.  I can see how audiobooks are nice, kind of like having someone tell you a story, but if your attention wavers or if there's a scratch on the CD you can get a little lost.
