Ugly Baby Pity Party

By Cosmic Cairns on February 4, 2020 9:09 pm

It seems like as a society, every time we encounter a baby we're expected to fawn all over it and act like it's the most adorable thing of all time.  But can we be honest for a minute here?  Some babies are really weird looking.  Some look like toads.  Some look like eggplants.  Some look like freaky miniature old men. It's not really a big deal.  I'm sure lots of unattractive babies grow up to be perfectly fine looking humans, or at the very least develop great personalities!  Looks certainly aren't everything.  Still, it probably feels a little bad to have an ugly baby.  So this song is here for you if you need it.

I mostly went with acoustic guitar and vocals this week.  I did bust out my cello for the first time in 2020 and added a little taste of it at the end.  I'll try to do something more with it soon. Also used popcorn tin percussion.

Haha, this is sweet. When my kid was a baby, she was bald on top with a crown of hair on the sides and back. It was unfortunate. smile
I love that cello ending!

From the pictures you showed me it seems like she's already blossomed into a cutie.  There's hope for unfortunate looking babies everywhere!

Haha you are absolutly right...
The text is sweeet and lovely enhanced by the music... the high guitar and of course the cello are giving a nice edge...
Still on reaper? The popcorn percussion sounds especially nice this week...

LOL, too funny. But seriously, you're a monster. How dare you not fawn over every baby... even the hideously ugly ones. It's one thing if the baby is a total asshole, then all bets are off.

Loving the cello and glad to hear it back. Great vocals and lyrics.  Popcorn sounding especially majestic this week.

Yeah, I'm still on Reaper and will probably be using it for the foreseeable future.  I'm starting to get the feel for it a bit.  I'm trying some different ways in recording the popcorn tin.  In the past I've set it on the floor or balanced it between my legs and hit it with two drumsticks.  This week I held it in one hand and hit it with one drumstick with the other.

I guess I'm just not really a baby person.  People always want to show me pictures of their babies and I'm like, no thanks.  Got a picture of your doggy or kitty-cat?  Now I'm interested.  Even ugly dogs are still cute.  Ugly babies?  Eh.  Plus, some of them totally are assholes.  smile

Fun track! I agree with comments about strings. That is a nice touch. It was about to go epic at the end with the layers of strings... smile

Yeah, I'll have to do something later this year where I pile on more layers of strings.  Just wanted to get a little taste of cello in there.  It'll be back for sure.  And maybe I'll even bust out my old violin.

Hahaha that was excellent, the lyrics made me laugh big_smile The compo is great, sweet harmonies!

great and funny....because it´s so true smile I liked the cello especially, nice mournful but beautiful sound, suits the theme very well.

I was a gorgeous baby, now I am just an ugly man.

Great job blending cello and popcorn tin, it made such a lovely outro

Thanks!  I thought it was a kind of funny idea and thought, why not run with it?

Gotta love the good old cello.  I'll definitely do some more with it this year.

I suppose it works the other way sometimes, too.  Thanks!

popcorn tin percussion smile  nice!

But it does kind of reflect on the parents a little, genetics and all that.

True.  Of course you never know how the genes will combine and express themselves.  This reminds me a little bit of the old Conan O'Brien routine "If they mated" where he would take two ostensibly beautiful celebrities and combine their features into something freakishly hideous.

wonderful song and great idea to write a song about. well done.

HAAAAA! smile smile I have a seven month old... . . .. . she is ugly af! hahaha nah not really... I got lucky... .. .i think tongue smile big_smile

Thanks!  After doing Weekly Beats for several years, it starts getting harder to discover subjects for songs.  I got mostly bored with love songs a long time ago... there's too many of those things in the world already.  But this one just came to me and I knew I must write a song about it.

Oh wow, I didn't know you had a kid recently.  Congrats!  I'm sure she's the most precious thing ever!  I do know she's got a cool-as-shit papa and that's a head-start in life already.

Heyyy thanks C.C. Very kind of you smile And yes she is the super precious big_smile

I'm always envious of these style productions. It's something I'd love to try myself one day because I admire the style so much. Nice track, man. Love the popcorn perc big_smile real relaxing listen.

Thanks for listening and I would definitely encourage you to try something like this.  Weekly Beats is definitely a good opportunity to try different things.

Great lyrics, so true. I have recoiled from ugly babies before. Feel bad, but woah, little old man trolls indeed. This is well timed, I have a brand new niece, have been seeing her on face time a lot. She's not so bad looking really. My brother lucked out.

Haha yep reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where they dealt with that.  This is a super catchy track and I think would fit perfectly in a Wes Anderson film smile  Excellent cello and popcorn tin!

I'll admit some of them are cute.  But others?  Yeesh.  It does kind of seem to be luck of the draw and also no real indicator of future looks/personality.

Oh yeah, I think I remember that Seinfeld episode.  Been awhile.  I just have a vague memory of Elaine recoiling from an ugly baby.
