The Drift

By Cosmic Cairns on August 7, 2018 9:15 pm

I started out with a guitar line that sounded a bit like a dusty Western to me.  I thought it would be kind of cool to meld it with a sort of space vibe.  To give it a sort of expansive feel I inserted some moments where it almost sort of devolves to free jazz or something before returning to the main motif.  My cat Sidney also decided he wanted to contribute some guest vocals to this track.  I picked up some of his meows on the microphone which I then put a flange effect on and ran first forwards then backwards.  It actually sounded pretty neat so I incorporated it into the middle part of the song along with some ocarina.  Then I added a bit of vocals myself.  Finally I made a dissonant outro through several tracks of manually detuning the guitar strings.  Hope you enjoy the journey.

Is that metalic percussion at the beginning also Sidney? Love the guitar outro. A very enjoyable journey indeed!

Nice bluesy quality to that slow strumming guitar. Evolves into a bit more of a space rock sound but does have some warm blues moments. Vocal section is really cool. Very big sound. btw, Sydney's meows played backwards sound like he is just saying "tuna fish" repeatedly.

I guess it does kind of sound like it, but no, he's only in the middle section.

Thanks!  Knowing Sid, he probably was saying "tuna fish."  smile

Very good progression throughout, a nice voyage! Purrfect inclusion of your cat's voice and yours smile

Nice guitar work with the spacey feel it gives it a spaghetti space-western vibe smile  Sydney sounds like the warp drive is about to kick in.  Nice work!

Thanks!  Sid seemed really insistent on contributing so who was I to deny him?  It did seem to fit purr-fectly as mentioned.

Yeah I was feeling that spaghetti-western vibe first and then decided to add the spacey feel.  I like the idea of the warp drive kicking in.

Thanks!  Yeah I like me a good space Western.  And when the kitty insists on singing there's not much denying him.  smile

When the western kicks in, the tempo synchronization is all over the place. Truly this is the wild west.

That started partly by accident but then ended up partly by design.  It gave me the idea to get more "free-flowing" with the various layers, which I thought gave it more of a drifting feel.

This has some very haunting qualities in it... sort of ennio morricone in dub. Very interesting journey, great work!

Thanks!  Morricone is always a good source of inspiration.

Nice ambiance. Love the acoustic guitar. I hear that tempo / sync drift, slightly disorienting at times, but interesting! Drift away!

I felt like part of this at least needed to be acoustic.  Every onve in awhile I think a little disorientation can be good.  Thanks for listening!
