Songs That Are Going To Exist But Don't Yet

By Cosmic Cairns on November 3, 2020 7:28 pm

Sometimes I'll try to brainstorm song titles.  I write ideas down in a notebook as they occur to me and that way if I'm having trouble thinking about something to write a song about I can look at my list and it helps give me a direction to go in.  I was recently scanning the list and the thought occurred to me that what I was looking at was a list of songs that are going to exist, but don't yet.  And then I thought that was something to potentially write a song about, so it went on the list.  I was trying to distract myself as much as possible from the election this week because it was giving me mega-anxiety (pretty relieved right about now) so it was a good time to think about future songs that will some day come into being.  There are a bunch of different sounds going on in this one including microkorg, the iris2 plugin, guitar, bass, weird vocal effects, harmonica, and a pan flute I recently found at my parents' house that I asked if I could have.  I don't really know how to play it, but I can squeeze some sounds out of it (sometimes), so I used it.  I was also recently reminded I haven't utilized the trusty old popcorn tin in a while, so I pulled that out for the percussion.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

There are many songs that don't exist today
They haven't been written yet and so we cannot play them
But someday they will be here floating freely along
There'll be songs for everyone and songs for everything
But they still don't exist right now and so we cannot sing them
But think about how all that music will sound as it plays
We can channel all the songs if we keep open minds
Maybe they're out there already and we just have to find them
Think of a song and we'll all sing along with it now

I love this, and think the title is fantastic. It's an idea I want to incorporate into a short story some day. There's just something really nice about a collection of things that don't yet exist. Lovely lyrics, too.

Fun song! I like your instrument sounds and this story. I have this list also! I write a name as I think one I enjoy.

A cool Syd Barrett feel to this.  Great mix of sounds.  I'm the opposite regarding song titles as I create and then listen back and see what I conjure up in my mind from the music.

Hearing a popcorn tin being referred to as a viable instruments still makes me laugh not because it's a dumb idea, but because I understand that it is a  valid instrument. Thank you for showing me the way. The track holds together really well, though the ending was what I liked the most. There are other things happening outside of this song, this moment or event, and sometimes what we believe is imporant enough to focus on at the moment is really just one part of a greater or different "song" in life. The sirens blaring in the distance moves us to think about other "songs" in life. Really cool.

It's a chill Sunday afternoon on a raft sliding through the jungle. The river is calm but the cicadas are making themselves heard. We found a patch of sand on the bank of the river, there is a bit of a shadow where we can shelter from the hot sun. It's a good time to lay down for a while and let our minds wander.

Yeah something definitely resonated with me when that idea hit.  It was like I was getting a little glimpse into the future or something and it was kind of cool.

Yeah, it's sort of an ongoing thing for me.  If I think of something I'll write it down for later use.

I used to operate that way with song titles back when I recorded on 4-track cassette.  I think the shift to using the computer changed my mode to coming up with song titles sooner partially because I wanted to save files early on so I wouldn't lose the work I had done and I had to come up with a name for the file.  I started out trying to just use placeholder names but a lot of times those names just ended up sticking and now I'm kind of in the habit of either coming up with a title really early on in the process or before I even start.  (Funny example that pops to mind:  When I first started using my computer I was doing a song that I temporarily titled "Folk Tune" because my early idea involved just acoustic guitar and vocals.  By the time I finished it, it had evolved into something that didn't sound like a folk song in the slightest, but I had gotten so used to calling it "Folk Tune" by that time that the name stuck.)

Way back a long time ago when I was first trying my hand at recording on a cheap tape deck and I hardly had any equipment at all, I learned that I could improvise a lot of stuff using whatever objects were at hand.  I still try to keep that in mind even though I have a lot more "real" instruments now.  Found sounds are something I still like to incorporate.  Thanks for listening!  The end is actually my favorite part, too.

Thanks for listening and for the cool imagery!  I'll have to listen back with that idea in my mind.

This is amazing. Really feels like it needs to be played in a coming of age film.
How did you mix your vocals? I've always wanted to try this effect

Ah yes, that makes sense.  I think my way still works cause I usually use Ableton as an overqualified tape machine to record my modular tracks which are usually one take so once I record it in, it's virtually done.  Time to name the track when rendering out even before I save the recording sometimes.  Haha.

I like the philosophical lyrics a lot! The music has very cosy campfire feeling to it and works so well with the positive message. The end part is even a bit psychedelic....Great!!!

For the effect at the end I ran the microphone through a tremelo effect on a digitech vocal processor.  Then at the very end I added some heavy reverb on top of that.

Yeah for a one take performance it would be a lot easier.  Most of my tracks utilize a lot of takes and there's nothing more frustrating than getting really far along and then having a crash or something and realizing you didn't save.  I've had that happen a couple times and now I try to save early and often.

Thanks!  I definitely needed something to take my mind off the election.  And the end was a lot of fun to do.

completely wasted or nicely drunken while singing? Nevermind, it sounds awesome. You are a mastermind.

Thanks!  The last time I tried to record myself singing while inebriated I'd have to say the results were pretty bad, so now I just try to approximate the effect while completely sober.

I love this, the mix of instruments is awesome but more than anything, the concept and lyrics really make it. This is very nice. Good idea also to keep a book of song ideas!

I've used the song idea book for a long time now, but it's especially useful for Weekly Beats since we need to come up with so many ideas.  Thanks for listening!

Great intro ... and awesome title and lyrics. Now there's one more song that DOES exist and that's a good thing. We've commented to each other about this before, but I love thinking about where songs come from ... they're out there in the ether, and we snatch them and record them. This is some deep truth here in your track. Let's find them and sing along indeed. Also nice synth line and percussion, is that the old fav popocorn tin? Ah, yes, I see it is. Welcome back popcorn tin.

Yeah I remember we've talked about it before and it's definitely something I've thought about semi-often.  The eternal mystery of music.  Where does it come from and why do a series of noises come together to form something greater than the sum of their parts?  It was pointed out to me recently that the good old popcorn tin hadn't made an appearance for a while, so I brought it back for this one.  It'll probably make another comeback before the end of the year, which is approaching rapidly!

Sweet panning on this man, sounds really cool.  Love the idea for the lyrics too, such an exciting concept.

Thanks!  The subject matter is definitely a fascination for me.

this is the WB mission statement!

True that.  When you think that at the beginning of the year none of our 2020 tracks existed and look how much music we've collectively willed into creation, it's pretty crazy!

And 96% of the tracks I made, I didn't want to do it, but my commitment to the CREW made it happen.  heart

I need more details on this popcorn tin - what is your kernel/empty space ratio?

Well it's an old popcorn tin someone gave me for Christmas several years ago.  The popcorn is long gone and it was after it was empty I noticed it would make a decent percussive instrument.  It would be interesting to try it with various levels of popcorn in it to see if it changes the sound or if nothing else to use it as a giant shaker.

The tin's back, and it's as glorious as ever.

To be fair, nothing's stopping anyone from playing a song that doesn't exist yet, it's how songs come to be in the first place after all.

Wait... is that how songs are created???  I had no idea.  To be fair, I'm not trying to imply that anything is preventing people from writing songs.  In fact, this is very specifically about songs that will exist.  So people are 100% for sure going to play them someday.  But now that I think about it I'd actually say you literally can't play a song that doesn't exist.  Once it's played it instantly loses it's non-existent status.  But really that's just semantics.  Honestly I was looking at a list of song titles that I was planning on writing songs about, but haven't yet.  Hence, I can't play them.  Yet.  That's all the song's about.  Nothing's stopping anyone from making movies that don't exist yet either, but we can't watch them until someone makes them.

You could play them, you just don't know what they sound like. In fact, that's how I make my WB music, I play them before I even know what they sound like.

And I could close my eyes and type a bunch of random letters on my keyboard and have no idea what I wrote.  It didn't exist before I did it.

But it did exist before you read it. Also, you should totally do that for next week's song.

I realize I don't have to hear a song to make it exist.  There are countless songs that have been recorded that I've never heard and I don't deny their existence.  But I do know that as long as humans are around they will continue to make music.  In the year 3000 there will be songs that don't exist now.  Heck, next week on Weekly Beats a hundred or so new tracks will be posted that don't exist yet.  But they will.  That's all I'm trying to talk about.   It's an ode to creativity really.  Anything else is beyond the scope of this song.  I do like the idea of trying to create lyrics through random typing, but I don't know how I would pronounce something like dsfytwsddfhehryrweeuyopqw.  I guess I could do my best approximation.  That could be fun.

Yea, that makes sense.

If you need somewhat more sophisticated lyrics, I got a thing for that. A generator that generates words from syllables guaranteed to be pronounceable, but not necessarily meaningful. I used it in 2016 to write lyrics I never sang.

Sure.  I would check that out.

I really dig that new trippy flute sound.  And the acoustic guitar and bass sound really full with your vocals.  Big collage of sounds. It's like peering into the great infinite imagination scape of future songs in your head.

Thanks!  That's probably the pan flute you're talking about.  I'm not good enough with it yet to play anything super complex, but it sounds pretty cool to me.  I need to practice with it some more though to fully unlock it's potential.

We can talk about in on the Discord, much easier that way.

Yay popcorn tin!  The bass and guitar are super melodical and catchy along with your vox.  Sweet fx on your vocals towards the end too.

The vocal effects were definitely a lot of fun to do and probably ended up my favorite part on this song.
