Snow Angel

By Cosmic Cairns on February 14, 2024 8:44 pm

In the spirit of mixing things up I put this one together a little differently than my sort of "go to" way of working.  I started with a MIDI loop that I transposed to a couple different synth sounds and then piled on top of each other.  Then added some more synth along with bass and cello.  I ran my voice through Valhalla Supermassive and improvised some simple, minimalist lyrics.  It sounded wintery to me so I thought of a snow angel, but instead of being stuck on the ground, this one rises up and takes flight.

Dude, this gives me such strong maudlin of the Well vibes, which is one of my favorite bands and pretty underground. (Check out Catharsis of Sea-Sleep and Dreaming Shrines for reference). Really digging the sound of the vocals with those strings and drums.

I've never heard of that band before, but I checked out the song you mentioned.  I can see the similarity in the less heavy parts of it.  Thanks for the recommendation!

I like how the different orchestrated midi parts sorta flow and groove within each other.  The bass and cello weave their way in nicely too.  Supermassive is a fun reverb to mess around with.  It def gives your vocals and the mix that wintry feel.  Cool vocal harmonies as well.  The stop-motion video of this description would be cool to see/hear together smile

I am a sucker for reverbs I have a bunch of both software and pedals to play around with will have to check out Supermassive love the spacey feel it gives.

Thanks!  I agree Supermassive is fun to mess around with and every time I have I always come away impressed with what it can do.

If you're into reverbs, it's definitely worth getting.  You can download it for free, it has a number of cool presets and, of course, you can tweak it also.

You're right, the slow buildup does give it a wintery cold snowy vibe! Super nice, I really appreciate how the stuff is layered. Very nicely put together, well done!

Yessss, reminds me of those berries I ate when I got lost in the woods

this is awesomely epic.... like some dervish singing at the mountain top as the sun rises. Very etheral and widescreen track, superb!

A rich wintery soundscape. I can see the snow angels rising from the ground and flying. Voice is great through supermassive. Cello is nice. Great song!

a very nice and calming song. I think I have never heard your voice in such a reverbcloud before. It has some emily feeling to it. The synth and the cello are beautiful too. Well done.

Thanks!  I guess it's still technically winter here, but it hasn't felt that wintery lately.  I just figured I'd try to capture some of that winter vibe before it's entirely gone.

I hope those were the good berries and not the toxic ones!

Thanks!  That's a nice visual for sure.

Thanks!  I'll definitely need to play around some more with some vocal effects like this.

I've played with running my voice through Supermassive a little bit in the past, but I think more with backing vocals or just some general oohs and aahs.  Thought I'd give it a try on the main vocal this time.  I agree, there is a bit of an Emily feel to it.
