Shaking Off the Rust

By Cosmic Cairns on January 2, 2018 9:00 pm

Hey everyone out there in WeeklyBeats land.  It's good to be back, but also kind of daunting.  I actually started 2017 on a roll after doing all 52 weeks of WeeklyBeats 2016.  I was continuing to record some music at a decent rate at the beginning of the year, although not quite a song a week.  But as the year progressed my work schedule got a lot busier and then I managed to have an accident in August in which I broke my middle finger on my right hand.  So I didn't record anything at all for the last half of the year.  This was the first time I'd attempted any kind of musical output in months, so I really did feel pretty rusty.  My finger is doing much better, although there's a little pain and stiffness still.  My work schedule is continuing to look pretty crazy this year so I expect there will be some weeks with some kind of half-assed output, or maybe I won't make the full 52 this year.  But I'm going to try my best.  Look forward to hearing all the stuff you guys create as it's always impressive and inspiring!

Good to hear you back. Very nice.

Ouch! If this is rusty, it's a very good kind of rust. Like the crackle ending.

A solid way to shake off the rust, my friend!

So sorry about your accident, but I think it will be great rehab to just get back in the game and make tracks.  There is some rhythmic wonkiness here, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.  Just keep going!

Guess who's back... back againnn... Cosmos back... tell a friend .... smile Nice start bruh big_smile

Beautiful hypnotizing track. Maybe a bit too short?

Thanks.  I wasn't happy with how it was ending so I thought some sort of weird noise there would be nice.  So I ended up multi-tracking the sound of a can getting crushed.

Thanks!  Gotta do something to shake off the rust, that's for sure.

Thanks!  Yeah, at first the finger was pretty much preventing me from playing music at all, but now I can mostly work around it.  It's actually probably better as far as music goes that it happened on my right hand because even at this point I don't think I would be able to press down on a fret-board if it was my left hand.  It's just everything else in life that's more difficult since I'm right handed  smile.  But yeah, hopefully I'll be able to work out some of the bugs rhythmic and otherwise as I get more in the swing of things.

Hey thanks!  Nice to see you back as well!

Thanks!  I kind of intentionally kept this one short just to ease myself back into the whole WeeklyBeats thing.  I have an irregular work schedule but sometimes it gets super hectic, so on weeks like that I'll probably do some shorter tracks.  But I plan on doing some longer more developed ones as well!

Welcome back!  Digging that groove with the swirling vocals.  The outro achieves the shedding of the rust imho smile  Nice work!

Thanks!  Yeah, I felt like the outro had a good "shaking something off" feeling to it.  Hopefully it really is rust!  smile

Catchy tune, like the vocals. It has "shaking off" feeling for sure. Good job getting back on the tune-wagon, welcome back! I empathize with you on the work/life challenges and conflicts.

Thanks!  Yeah the work/life challenges always make WeeklyBeats difficult for everyone I'm sure.  I know as much as I'd like to devote all or at least most of my time to creative activities there's bills to be paid and other random b.s. that life just loves to throw at you.  I really am going to try to give it my best shot this year though!

Sounds interesting and unusual. Aahs are great too. Fav!

Thanks!  I was originally going to go straight-up instrumental, but then felt like a little vocal touch would be nice.  Also I didn't feel like writing lyrics!
