Shadowgate

By Cosmic Cairns on November 2, 2022 6:58 pm

A song about some weary travelers who have been on the road for a long time and are finally on the way back home.  They just have to get through the mysterious and possibly evil shadowgate before they can get there.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Shadowgate looming ahead in the falling rain
If you don't pay the toll you'll be turned away
And that would just lead to a long delay
And we can't afford that

And now we'd better raid the coffers
Turn out our pockets if we must
Shadow Lord requires a tribute
Or we might get blown into dust

And then we'd never ever get back home

It's not too late to make it on time if we keep our pace
We might even be there by Saturday
We just gotta get through the shadowgate
Without falling to pieces

And we'd better act like we belong here
And we've done all of this before
We're wily veterans of the outlands
We've survived hurricanes and war

And now we've set our sights on going home

In the land of sage and honey
Where the gold cathedral lies

Avert your eyes don't even look at the darkening skies
And don't draw attention, we're almost through
And then there's nothing to bar our way
To our destination

Can you feel the shadows nipping at you
Hoping to wriggle their way in
Try to maintain a focused mind and
Try to project a thickened skin

And then it's just a straight shot back to home

Home it's nice to be home, there's just nowhere like it...

Dang I dunno how you keep churning out these detailed lyrical numbers.  Good storytelling and a anthemic feel to escape the shadowgate.  Not sure if it's about the old game but that old NES version scared the crap out of me the one time I played it lol.  Suhweet outro too!

there is no translation for shadowgate in German language, but I think it must be an evil passage to enter somewhere. the songlyrics explain it very vell. it is such a nice cosmic cairns song again, evoking pictures of hobbits coming home after their trips. very well, how you did the instrumentation, the guitarsolo and the beachboys outro. a great song.

Oh man, I forgot about that game.  It's not about it, but I can't say for 100% certain that's not where I subconsciously got the title from.  I just had the image of a dark evil gate in my mind and that seemed like a fitting name for it.

You've pretty much nailed exactly what I had in mind.  Just an evil passage that some sort of hobbit-like people have to get through on their way home from their adventures.

The levity of the music and the theme remind me of the Viva La Dirt League videos. I could imagine your tracks being a soundtrack to their videos. Epic track!

Thanks!  I had to look up Viva La Dirt League because I'm not familiar with them, but I can see how the last couple tracks in particular could be a fit!

Such a bright and hopeful song, so inspiring! especially love how you bring it all together at the end heart

Your production skills get better and better. This sounds so good! This one makes me so happy, those harmonies, multitrack voices, just WOW! Great lyrics. Are we all the weary travelers sometimes?

This is so fantastical, good stuff
Just something you gotta do, you know, no way around it

Shadowgate? Is that like Watergate, like a scandal in the shadow world?

I like the vocal power coming in at 1:34 where you push the intensity a bit and then drop into a different more mellow vocal melody before the guitar lead.  So much variety of expressiveness in the arrangement. Fun harmonies and layers at the end.  Pulling out all the stops!

Thanks!  It felt like it needed something there at the end to bring it home, so to speak.  smile

Thanks!  WB has afforded me a lot of chances to practice my production skills this year.  I think I'm getting better.  I can tell I'm at least getting more efficient at it and not wasting as much time.

Thanks!  Sometimes you've just got to get through stuff.

Ah, the Neverending Story!  A favorite from my youth.  I would say this scene probably at least somewhat inspired this song in my mind.

A scandal involving shadow governments maybe?  I tried to do a slightly different vocal effect on each section for this one.

I definitely thought of that exact scene listening to this, ngl

SHADOWGATE IS THE BEST GAMEEEEEEE

This song is really well recorded and mixed - something about the drumming timing is messing me up a little bit?  almost like it just needs to be nudged a hair?  sometimes I get rocked with recording latency through my interface, but other times not?  it's strange.  I think it's because some of your guitar strumming is super "swingy" and the drums are super "straight" maybe? If you want to discuss it more, I'm available - if that's not helpful, please ignore!

LOVE the last line and the vocal overlays.  epic ending!

I'm sure you're right that the drums could be nudged.  I don't totally hear it, but I also don't feel like I'm always super attuned to those types of things.  This is also where I think another pair of ears is always helpful.  I'll try to give the guitar strums and the drums some extra attention on future tracks and see if I can't get 'em a little more solid.

You're making me wanna write songs smile heart big_smile

Second time to ask how the drums are done?

It's fun to write songs.  smile   Yeah, this one's the virtual drum kit, too.
