Platypus Pajamas

By Cosmic Cairns on March 24, 2022 3:34 am

Sometimes platypuses just like to stay home at night and relax in their pajamas.

I was getting ready for work the other morning and as I hopped in the shower a little melodic snippet got stuck in my head.  I didn't want to forget it so when I got out I hummed it into my phone.  Then on a whim I just randomly played a different idea I had recorded to my phone several months ago.  I don't even remember recording that one, but it was another melodic snippet and it struck me that the two ideas I had months apart would work really well together.  It was a total happy accident.

I decided I wanted one of the lines to be played by some kind of brass instrument and since I don't actually play any, I decided to acquire spitfire's epic brass and wind.  I got it just for this track, although I'm sure I'll utilize it again in the future.

This platypus says let's stay home and take it easy
We'll light a fire and stay inside where it's not freezing
Turn off the news, kick off our shoes, and then we'll try to make things cozy
Unplug the phones, we'll be on our own, and you'll see everything is rosy

We're bundled up inside our platypus pajamas
And we'll pretend we're hanging out in the Bahamas
The night is young, we're having fun, so let's stay up a little longer
Nowhere to roam, we're safe at home, so pour the drinks a little stronger

I'd pause the world to keep you happy

you are such a world-builder.  I could see a map of the galaxy, and every CosmicCairns song is mapped to a different planet, and then you can zoom in and see that a few tracks live on the same planet smile

love to hear the brass!  glad you got that, going to be a great addition to the universe

This song makes me happy. It has a great upbeat feel to it (admittedly I was kind of also sold on the title alone haha)

I like the idea of that map.  If I knew anything about web design it'd be cool to have a site like that where you could click on the different planets and there would be links to the songs.  I'm sure that I will put the brass to good use in future songs as well.  I've always liked the sound of it and not to mention your awesome horn work in some of your recent tracks is certainly inspiring.

Thanks!  Once I started to conceptualize the track, the title was an absolute no-brainer for me.

Good vibrations! Wouldn't It Be Nice! The more I think of this I come to the conclusion you are infected with the beach-boys virus, especially from 2:20 on you mutate to this Brian Wilson genius, repeating the same rhyme and playing around with it so nicely. The recording technique and your microphone catch everything so sweet and brilliant. I love this track.

Thanks!  Glad to hear you liked this one.  I think I did get infected a little by the Beach Boys here.

The theme, background and lyrics are awesome. How random are platypus pajamas! What a delightful idea. And the song delivers, between its nice cozy a little weird atmosphere, the super positive guitar, the brass, and your delivery. This is a little sunshine!

Super catchy melodies between the lead guitars, vocals and epic brass.  Those Spitfire libraries can come in handy for sure.  I too never knew I was a fan of Platypus Pajamas til now smile

Thanks!  I was trying my best to bring a little bit of happy sunshine vibes here.

Thanks!  I'll have to look into some more of those spitfire libraries just to see what's out there.  In an ideal world I would love to have a live brass band playing on this, but the spitfire for sure works in a pinch!

I noticed quite a few WB tracks got more horny over the last few weeks. Nice brass riffs! Great pop sound this week! Tweak the tempo and beat a bit and I feel a good ska variation. Fun vocals with the chant at the end. Where can I get me some of them platypus pajamas?

Did Austin Powers come through here and make everyone horny???  I've never been super into ska, but it would be interesting to hear a ska variation on this.  If I ever get a merchandise empire going I'll for sure have to sell platypus pajamas.

Great theme for a slumber party.

It's so cool how this was conceived. I love those lyrics! The music reflects the sentiment. Nice work smile

Definitely better than a sad clown slumber party.

Thanks!  This one was fun to do.

In the best way, I think this could be on a kids album. I love pure happy tunes like this. Loving your animal stories recently. Yes yes, the brass will so perfect for your songs! Love your line "I'd pause the world to keep you happy", that made me happy. Ooh, then singing in rounds in the later half, that's dope, singing in rounds always sounds so cool. I just listened to your most recent 4 songs, I feel like they could be an EP!

Thanks!  I'm looking forward to playing with the brass some more for sure.  I've also been thinking about gathering some of my early 2022 songs into an album, but I actually have a lot of leftover songs from WB 2020 I've been remixing when I get a chance.  I think I want to release those as an album first so I can sort of track my progression.
