Neutrino Casino

By Cosmic Cairns on March 24, 2020 11:35 am

I stitched this track together using some old things I had laying around and adding some new stuff to it.  I had started to record a track I had temporarily titled "Neutrino" late last year.  I got a bass part and some popcorn-tin drums as well as a very minimal synth-line recorded.  Then the extremely-out-of-date version of pro-tools I had been using suddenly got really glitchy and I was unable to finish the track.  I managed to salvage what I had and import it into Reaper.

Listening to it again the little synth-part sounded vaguely like a slot-machine sound or something to me.  And that reminded me of a sample I had made on my phone a little while back.  I was walking through an actual casino a few months ago and digging the sounds of all the machines going off around me at the same time so I started to record on my phone as I just wandered around for awhile.  Unfortunately shortly after I began recording they decided to blast a shitty pop song over the loud speakers, which ruined most of my sample, but I did get a little bit of useful sounds, which I added to the track.  So "Neutrino" became "Neutrino Casino."

Finally I added some new guitar and vocal parts to flesh things out.  I improvised the lyrics based on the new title and this is what I ended up with.

This is so funny that we were both on the Casino vibe.  So this track is when you are trapped in the casino, and this is the vibe of the rock band that's playing at the buffet.  You can hear the slot machines in the distance, over the music.  The vocal overdubbing is when you are getting a headache from all the smoke and bright lights.  THEN my track is when you finally find the exit and get spit out, exhausted, but also kind of relieved.

Yeah it is funny.  And I like your explanation of how our tracks work in tandem.  I think it's definitely the same casino.  First you're inside, then you're outside.

Jackpot! Cool guitars on this one, the outro is a nice touch!

There is a surf rock vibe to this one. smile Beach casino.

Neutrino casino is a fantastic name. The rhythm on this is very cool, it has a very pleasing swing to it. Nice outro, casinos sound so distinctive!

Hypnotic guitars on a crazy beat. Love your singing. Wonderful track. Very good job.

I am trying to hold all the info from your description in my head while I listen, but all I can picture is you walking through a casino playing a popcorn and singing. Instead of walls, it's a star field, like slot machines within a spiral galaxy. Cool casino recording at the end. Super trippy sounds.  At neutrino casino, are we playing for sub atomic massless particles or do they got quarter slots as well?

Thanks!  I had some of the casino samples in the main body of the song, but I thought they could stand some highlighting in the outro.

I didn't go in with a surf intention, but I can kind of hear it now that you mention it.  Beach casino works for me.

Thanks!  I'm not really a drummer, but I like to pretend I am sometimes.  Casinos for sure have their own distinctive sound.

Thanks!  The singing was the last thing I added.  I wasn't sure if I was going to put any vocals on this at first, but then I decided to go for it.

This one did have a bit of a convoluted path towards creation, but I like your mental image so feel free to run with it.  I imagine they have to have some quarter slots for the non-quantum tourists, but they're definitely not as popular as the quark slots.

There is no way out! I feel it. I feel like maybe few drinks, late night in a smoky casino. That tin drum beat is the only thing keeping me going, and onward we must go. If you can't find your way out ... just keep going right!? Hypnotic swirly fun.

Excellent backstory and yay popcorn tin!  I can def feel those casino vibes with that slot machine synth ringing in the distance.  Very creative as always!

I think that's part of the reason why they ply you with free drinks.  It's to make you looser with your wallet, but it's also super easy to get lost when you're inebriated enough.  And if you can't get out, you might as well gamble some more!

Gotta love the popcorn tin.  I'm sure it'll return sooner or later this year.

Felt a good intensity throughout this one. I lived in Vegas for a little while and I have been thinking about a ll the casinos that are shutdown there and what a crazy place it must be right now. More than usual I guess.

What a show, full of glitz and poor life decisions.

Yeah it's really crazy.  Casinos don't generally close for... anything really.  Not even after 9/11.  I saw someone post something about with the churches and casinos all closed, when heaven and hell agree you know it must be serious.

Glitz and poor life decisions.  The lifeblood of all casinos.

That field recording going on in the background makes this sound somehow nostalgic for me! The bass line is quite doomy and foreboding. Strange but beautiful stuff...

Thanks!  The bass line predates everything that's going on now, but it somehow feels appropriate to these times.
