Must Be Ghosts

By Cosmic Cairns on March 31, 2020 10:32 pm

This started out as an acoustic guitar and vocal track and then I added some cello.  Bowed cello lines in the upper register and then the bass line was created by plucked cello.  For the percussion I hand drummed on the back of my acoustic guitar.  Then I started to pile on some more and more sounds especially in the middle section to create a bit of a cacophony of ghost sounds.  There's musical saw, piano, electric guitar, slide whistle, and some pitch-bent synths in there.  If you want to sing along here's the lyrics:

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I guess that there's ghosts in the attic
It must be the ghosts that are banging around
It seems that there's ghosts in the attic
Must be the ghosts that keep making that sound
And I sure wouldn't go up there
When ghosts are lurking everywhere
They haunt the spaces in the walls
But I'm not sure you care at all
At all

There must be ghosts in the water
I think it's the ghosts that make it so cold
I'm sure that there's ghosts in the water
Must be the ghosts, I know it's getting old
And it's strange but it seems to me
We're flanked by things that we can't see
And we've repelled the mosquitoes
So I guess that it must be ghosts
Be ghosts

I think that there's ghosts in between us
Must be the ghosts that push us apart
Yes there are ghosts in between us
Must be the ghosts that keep breaking our hearts
And this could be the worst of it
If we can't just get over this
And we're the ones that hurt the most
But I say blame it all on ghosts
On ghosts

This song is haunted AF, except it's the ghost of good vibes.

Ah man you made my day with the musical saw! I had not heard that in a long time, it's such a cool sound! I would welcome any ghost that sounds like that in my house big_smile (as long as they don't do that in the middle of the night hahaha). Amazingly cheerful and quirky arrangement, the lyrics towards the end take a surprisingly dark turn!

There is something super nostalgic about this one. Vocals are very nice.

Sound super honest. smile

Thanks!  Maybe some nice ghosts dropped in on the recording session.

Yeah, I love musical saw.  I think that it's the first time I've busted it out this year, but I'll have to use it again for sure.  I started thinking about ghosts as some kind of metaphor for failed or dying relationships or something and that's what caused the dark turn at the end.

Thanks! I think I was feeling a little nostalgic when writing this so I guess it came through.

This is an earcandy too. Such a catchy melody you are singing and created a beautiful instrumentation. Everything came out very nice. Hope your ghosts continue to care for you.

Love the instrumental break!  Sounds like you had fun recording it.  A really nice retro vibe to this track.  Nice work.

Thanks!  I could always use the help of some friendly ghosts!

Thank you!  It was definitely fun to pile on instruments during that break.

I'm not saying it was Ghosts... but it was the Ghosts... Fun tune, the ghosts would be dancing!

Sweet sweet melody and sounds for those ghosts. This is lovely. I could hear those ghosts dancing around in my attic now. Nice to think of happy ghosts. Good to hear the saw again! Good one!

Thanks!  The saw was indeed overdue for a return.

Always happy to see the return of the cellos! all beautifully blended with the other elements.  Great vocals.  Warmer and more full in this track.  Are you playing a real saw?  I think I know the answer (of course).  Awesome ghost sounds and dance feel (like a waltz, not EDM).  Some homeowner advice.  Those ghosts in the attic usually turn out to be raccoons.  I'd get that checked out smile

It's a real saw that I play with my cello bow.  I actually have two saws.  The first one was made specifically to be a musical saw.  I ordered it many years ago from an old guy who built them and it came with a carrying case and an instructional VHS tape.  The second saw I found in a friend's garage and he let me have it.  It's an actual functional tool (I've used it to cut wood myself), but I tried it out with the bow and it has a beautiful voice which is distinctive and different from the first saw.  I used both saws on this track actually.  As for the ghosts in the attic, I had a squirrel get into the roof right above my bedroom one time.  I couldn't believe how loud that thing was as it banged around up there.  It liked to be especially active early in the morning and it was constantly waking me up.  It was horrible.  I finally found the hole it used to get in and out of the roof and got my landlord to patch it up.

Hell yeah, these strings are lovely. They have such a nice scratchy texture, sounds fantastic. Great songwriting too, you picked a top notch idea to work with. Very cool.

fun haunting!

Sorry for making such a ruckus in your attic!

Very nice mood! I think those cello/saw banshees work so fine... like the ghosts are joining in the party smile So full of positive vibes, I love this smile

Thanks!  It's nice to be able to put those cello lessons I took as a kid to good use.  smile

So that's where all the noise is coming from!

Thanks!  Once I had the ghost theme figured out all the other sounds really did seem to start falling into place and fitting nicely.

This definitely brought a smile to my face.

Thanks!  That's always nice to hear!

Excellent instrumentation especially with that ghostly saw.  This was a good track to help kick start my morning, thank you! smile

Thanks!  The saw is always fun.  I'll have to bring it back for some more tracks this year for sure.
