Melodic Haymaker

I was thinking about how some of my favorite music didn't really click right away.  You can listen to it several times and not really come away feeling anything about it.  But then, sometimes all of a sudden it just hits you and you suddenly really like it.  I really like when that happens.  So then my mind jumped to the idea of literally getting punched in the face by music.  Like really getting the crap beaten out of you.  I thought it was sort of funny so that's what this song is about.  I'm pretty sure it won't attack you, but it might be a good idea to wear protective gear nonetheless.  smile

Hit in the jaw and I fall
Didn't see it coming at all
I hit the floor and the world turns to black
Don't know where I am or why I was attacked

Now I see stars swirling round
And birds making sweet chirping sounds
Rings in my ears with its strange melody
Knocks me about and continues to sting

Music keeps blasting at me
Colorful notes I can see
Hit me like cinder blocks again and again
When did it start and lord when will it end?

There's something delightfully Pixies-esque about the guitars in this track that I love.

Really cool concept! Some sweet melodies too. Nice work man smile

Nothing like a bit of gratuitous distortion to brighten the day.

The distortion is strong in this one.
Good stuff

Thanks!  That's the second Pixies comparison I've gotten in a few weeks.  I guess I must be unconsciously channeling them a little lately, which is never a bad thing.

Yeah, I gotta find concepts for songs wherever I can.  52 weeks is a lot!

Thanks!  Distortion seemed to fit the theme on this one.  It's always sounded a bit violent to me.

Very cool man, definitely has your signature sound here.  Digging the heavily over driven, fuzzy guitar.

You win the fuzz-guitar medal this week. But there are so many more details intermingled into the track. Great work.

Thanks!  I've been wanting to do a fuzzy track and this seemed like a good opportunity.

Thanks!  I had fun layering in some of the extra little details in this one.

great topic and great fuzzy fuzzy fuzzy fuzzy sweater guitar

I listen to old albums and sometimes I'm like, "Wait, was this song ALWAYS on this album?  This song is so good to me now!"

That's one thing about pop music, the sheer ubiquitousness of it is most of the reason why you like it.  Alternatively, this is why abstract/classic is a tough catch for people, they are hard to memorize and therefore hard to predict.

I love when a song I've overlooked for a long time on an old album suddenly clicks.  It's like how did I not realize the greatness of this all along?

And yeah, I watched a video a little while back where someone went and analyzed popular music for the past 50 years or something like that and they concluded that it's simpler and more the same nowadays.  Like literally songs use less notes and they use the same notes as every other song, so the reason a lot of pop music today sounds the same is because it really literally sounds the same.  And it's true, your brain tends to like what's already familiar to it so it's "easy" to like that stuff, but for me it's definitely much more rewarding when something more challenging finally clicks.

This was gentle melodic punch, nice melodies, nice lyrics. I feel like I may have heard a guitar melody similar to this in another one of you songs? There are so many weeks. I love that feeling of rediscovering too. What song am I singing here, where it come from?! I feel like pop has gotten more samey, but sometimes it hits the spot.

It's totally possible it's similar to something else I've done this year, although off the top of my head I'm not sure exactly what.  Like you said, so many weeks.  It's hard sometimes not to do something similar to yourself (or others).

"I was thinking about how some of my favorite music didn't really click right away.  You can listen to it several times and not really come away feeling anything about it.  But then, sometimes all of a sudden it just hits you and you suddenly really like it. That's some fuzz on that guitar! What did you use? The melody from 1:03 that sounds slightly out of tune actually brings an interesting vibe to the piece.

I used my old digitech RP6, which is the first guitar pedal I ever got back in 1997.  It's not in its peak condition and some of the buttons on it don't work anymore, but it still has some cool sounds, so I like to use it sometimes.

I love the sound. Pretty catchy, too

Yah I agree there's a bit of that Pixies-disto going on.  Nice vocal harmonies especially with the background ooohs.  Catchy keys too that get kinda kaleidoscopic at times too.  Well done!

Thanks!  The kaleidoscopic keys were one of my favorite parts of this.

Great melody! And the lyrics are a clever description of the situation familiar to many of us. That bar room late night piano is a nice touch too. Also like how the stringlike sound gives the whole thing a nice horizon after the piano solo. Guitar is cool too, as usual. Great stuff...

Thanks!  I tried to have a little fun with the details on this.

I'm always drawn to your use of percussion sounds. The distortion on the guitars is wild. Old Digitech pedal I see. Neat!

Yeah, it's a cool pedal.  I used the hell out of it from probably 1997-2007, but it started to get a little wonky after 10 years so I decided to buy a new pedal at that point.  Then I lost the power cable somehow and because it's from the 90's it isn't compatible with newer ones so I couldn't use it at all for a while.  I ended up having to buy a replacement cable on ebay because even digitech doesn't stock them anymore.  It really does have some cool sounds though.  It used to allow you to edit sounds and save them, but I don't think that function works anymore.  I had some really crazy sounds saved that I had edited back in the day, but unfortunately they got lost when the pedal started to go a little on the fritz.  It still works well enough though and brings its own distinctive sounds that I like having it as an option to turn to.
