Junipers

I just kind of noticed recently that there are a couple people I know who are really stuck on the past.  Like in an unhealthy way.  I think pretty much everyone would go back and change a few things if it were possible to do so, but unfortunately as far as our current scientific knowledge tells us, the past is kind of set in stone.  And even if we could go back, we'd probably still find a way to screw up.  Mistakes are kind of what people do.  We've made mistakes in the past, we're probably making mistakes right now, and we'll continue to make mistakes in the future.  Hopefully we can learn from them and make improvements, but I think it's for the best if we can find a way to let them go.  Or at least not dwell on them too terribly much.  For the most part I'd rather look at a pretty tree than kick myself for something I did or didn't do twenty years ago.  So anyway, that's kind of the message I was going for on this song.  Keep moving on.  Because really you don't have a choice when it comes down to it.

Well I know nobody's perfect and I haven't been a saint
I've done my share of stupid stuff sometimes along the way
But I don't want to waste time trying to rationalize those things
Because that's really not a hill I want to die upon

I wish that I'd been kinder and I wish I hadn't sulked
I wish I'd had compassion more I wish I'd been more bold
But no amount of wishing hard will ever make it so
Because that ship set sail a long long time ago

And so instead I'll dream of things like trees in spring
And lush pristine coasts

I've changed my mind about a lot of stuff I thought before
Maybe I was ignorant or maybe just not sure
If our thinking can't evolve then what the hell's experience for?
And there's lots of better hills that one could die upon

I see junipers and douglas firs
Covered in white snow

I'm tired of looking backwards I want to see what lies ahead
When I can't change the deeds I've done or any word I said
Cause if you can't keep moving on you may as well be dead
And there's many miles to go before I go to bed

And so I'll look around from sky to ground
And take in everything

I feel like our relationship with the past often defines how we live the present and plan for the future. It's a topic I explore a lot in my short stories, so your comment and lyrics really resonate with me.

I love the way your song composition sounds so free and easy; my tracks often feel kind of stilted but this has a wonderful sense of flowy freedom.

Awesome message, I'm loving those lyrics. smile

Nice light song, good job on the orchestration, the vocals and lyrics.

A lovely playful vibe to this track.  Very authentic sounding at the same time.  Nice one!

There is a third option: mental gymnastics. History is written by the victor, if you see yourself as a winner, you can rewrite your own past for the better.

Great song. On-tempo and everything.

Awesome track. Beautiful vocals, especially when you add some background chorus lines. The instrumentation is very colourful, makes the song hippyesk and kind of psychedelic, but not in a trippy manner or overblown. Every single note has its own place and a good reason to be listened to. Keep moving on.

Thanks!  We're all literally made up of our experiences, so I suppose our pasts really do define us.  There's no escaping the past entirely, but I do think we can choose how to move forward.  By the way, I also write stories (when I find time and mostly for fun).  Do you have any of your stuff available online?  I'd be interested in checking out a story or two sometime.

Thanks!  I think it's a message I need to hear myself sometimes.

Hey thanks!  It was fun to arrange it for sure.

Sure, that's always an option, but I can't help but feel that sort of thinking is a large part of what's gotten the world into the mess that it's in right now.

Thanks!  I tried to keep things relatively simple, but also hopefully interesting.  I do like to include some backing vocals when I can.  It always seems to add a nice little something extra to songs.

Dwelling on the past can cause its share of troubles if it is allowed to weigh us down. The past informs the present, sometimes in ways that are detrimental.

Regarding the track, this is a fun tune. I am reminded of Cloud Cult, though I can't remember how they sound. It's been 8 years since I last listened to them.

Totally agree.  We can and should learn from the past, but we shouldn't let it ruin our futures.  I don't think I've ever hear Cloud Cult, but perhaps I will have to check them out.

Everything in moderation. You don't have to come out of it a megalomaniac.

Future is the new past.

Now that's a good way to look at it.

Oh man, looking at trees is so much better than stressing about the past. So much. This is great. I relate to these lyrics. Great melody, well done. Hey, yeah, gotta keep moving forward.

Thanks! Every once in a while I'll catch myself dwelling on something and I have to remind myself "Hey!  Don't do that!"  Now I can listen to this song to remind me.  smile

Def hear ya on being stuck in the past.  The guitar progression has a nice uplifting feel to it that backs up the lyrics.  Nice melody that the synth/guitar join in on too. Well done!

Thanks!  I felt like if I was going to do a "message" song it would be good to try to pair it with a bit of a catchy melody.
