Heart of Regulus

By Cosmic Cairns on August 19, 2020 12:47 am

So our air conditioner went down and I had to wait in a freaking ridiculously hot house for the ac repair guy to show up.  They gave us an estimated time of between 10am-noon, but 12pm came and went and when I called to see what was going on all they knew was he had been delayed at an earlier work site and they didn't know when he was going to come but it would definitely be that day.  It was miserably hot, I didn't know what else to do while I waited so I decided to record something to pass the time and hopefully take my mind off of how miserable it was.  I had three fans set up blasting on me.  They helped a little, but not too much.  They also made a lot of noise so I knew I couldn't record anything with a microphone.  That necessitated a direct line instrumental jam.  So I got out my electric guitar and my synths and just jammed this out.  Sorry if it's a little wonky at times.  I think I may have been starting to have some heat-induced hallucinations while recording.  The ac guy finally showed up around 4:30PM.  He was able to get it back up and running but he diagnosed it as an electrical issue and now we have to get the whole breaker box replaced on our house.  That's going to require the power to be cut for a whole day and is going to be freaking expensive.  Totally sucks, but I guess it is what it is.  2020 strikes again.

When you think 2020 is done, we get an invasion of space crickets directly from an incoming asteroid (plague as an option). It really sucks when the AC dies in the current conditions. I hope things are fine now at last!

This is a good jam - I find it interesting that even though it's played with electric guitars, this actually reminds me more of ambient electronic soundtrack than what we'd usually find with electric guitars. I really like that and find it inspiring!

I love the guitars in this piece. They sound really, really great. I can't imagine what it must have been like for you making this in the heat; given the summer weather here in Japan, I don't think I would have had it in me to do anything else but lie around in my own sweat and feel sorry for myself.

Sorry to hear about your AC man. The track is awesome. Great guitar work! It’s giving me some Pink Floyd vibes.

I wish I could afford an air conditioner as well. I ofen feel like getting boiled like a sausage in the summer and more worse, I sleep under the roof. But this luxury is way to expensive.
Your song is very chilling, wounderful guitarwork and especially the distorted guitarnoises at the end. And I did not hear any wonkyness at all. Everthing is well cooked.

Very nice blends of synths and clean delayed guitars. Hope the electricity job will not be crazy expensive... sad . Good luck.

This track really reminds me of some of Brian Eno's more obscure ambient jams, awesome stuff. Sorry about the heat though, that's always a nightmare sad

This jam is making me hot. Paired with the coffee, I feel the heat rising. Oddly, I was cold before this track started because of the AC blowing on me.

Yo Cosmic,

What order did you record the parts in?

Thanks!  Last year around this time we actually had a massive grasshopper invasion here.  I think they missed the memo and arrived a year early.

I kind of was just laying around feeling sorry for myself and I thought maybe recording could offer a bit of a distraction.  I think it actually kind of did, but I don't think I'll be attempting to recreate these recording circumstances any time soon.

Thanks!  I was kind of feeling the Pink Floyd thing myself while I was recording it.

Thanks!  AC is an absolute necessity here in the summertime.  Just going that one day without it was miserable.

Thanks!  It's looking like over $2000, but unfortunately it's gotta be done.

Eno's got some really great obscure stuff and a lot of it.  I should check some more of it out honestly.

Normally I'm actually cold at my desk in the summertime because my chair is positioned directly under the ac vent and I get blasted by it.  It's better than feeling like I'm melting though.

I did the beat and the synth chords first to give me some basis to jam over.  Then the guitars.  Then the bass and extra synth lines.  The distorted guitar noise at the very end was the last thing I did because I felt like it needed some other kind of textural element.

Awesome. Do you find that, that's your go to order of operations?

The bluesy guitar lines reminded me a bit of Jan Hammer's Miami Vice score.  Like in a scene where Crockett loses yet another girlfriend.  The irony of listening to this humid track is my AC is currently being repaired too!  What have you done!?  tongue jk!  Seriously it's hot in here, coffee was a horrible choice!  Love the guitar fx towards the end too.  Well done!

Uh oh.  Hope the broken AC thing isn't contagious.  I wouldn't wish it on anybody.  Thanks for listening!

You can hear the misery that went into this song, it's palpable. Sounds really effective.

Damn, I miss one week, and your sound totally changed! I can usually identify tracks from the musicians I often listen too, but this is totally different like Peter Gabriel, super lush with layers. Love all of it.  The synths and the layers of guitar.  Maybe you sweated yourself into a different level of consciousness while waiting for the AC to be repaired.  Strong, chaotic ending!  Hope all goes well with the electrical work.

Thanks.  All feelings including misery can be grist for the old musical mill.

I think I was in a bit of a different mind state.  It was bloody hot.  I guess it made for an interesting recording experience and may have led to different results than I might have otherwise gotten, but I don't recommend it and I don't think I'll be intentionally repeating it.

Damn, that sucks man.  Glad they were able to get out that day and you didnt have to sleep in a hot house.  Nothing worse then that.

I'm really liking this track, really mellow and chill.  I love the growly noise that comes in at 2:50.  Is that you rubbing the strings on an electric guitar or some kind of audio effect?

It's just making some noises on the guitar through a distortion effect.

This feels a little hot and melty. A hot desert night with the sun shining. I like the vibe.  Hope you're fixed up and chilling again.

Thanks!  We're up and running and appear to be good to go.  But now we've gotta get a new roof.  It never ends.

9am: "HELLO, we will be there between 10am and 12pm."

4:30pm: "HELLO, here we are."

The little low res crunch on the drums is awesome.  Chaotic heatstroke guitar meltdown at the end!

UGH good luck on the home repairs, we just had a mason bee invasion.

Unfortunately our house is kind of old and falling apart.  Also we're trying to re-finance to take advantage of the historically low interest rates and they're requiring us to do stuff like replace the roof.  It'll all be worth it in the long run though.

Oh you know what?  That's a win-win.  It's a hassle, but it's good that it's forcing you to take care of things now.

have fun raising the new roof!

Thanks!  We're in the process of de-cluttering, too.  It does feel good to make some improvements on the house.

Despite the trying circumstances, you could really produce a beatiful piece of music. Electronic but so human and frail and beautiful. I like this very much, great work!

Thanks!  Sometimes I suppose the best art is born from suffering!
