Down in the Velvet Mines

By Cosmic Cairns on November 23, 2022 9:38 pm

This is a bit of an experiment in that I've got a few cello lines, some of which are run through Valhalla Supermassive.  There's also one track of musical saw in there and some random vocal sounds.  Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving if you celebrate it!

It has an air of sorrow in it, let's hope it heroes will find a happy end. Happy Thanksgiving.

I love cellos, especially when they are recorded as close and present as you did here. where did you adjust the mic? the lines you played are beautiful and the reverb is well chosen.

Here's hoping for happy endings for all!  Happy Thanksgiving to you, too.

I've got it pretty close miked, although with enough room so I don't accidentally hit the mic with the bow while I'm playing.  smile  Additionally I added the supermassive effect from the get-go so I could play live to the reverb.

Damn, this is really cool.  Love to hear experimental processing on an otherwise traditional sounding piece.

Thanks! I always like trying to do weird things with traditional instruments.  I think it's kind of fascinating.

Really enjoyed this, great addition of the vocals, doesn't sound like early murcof, but reminded me of it with the manipulation and processing of these traditional stringed instruments.

It's a mood, a whole vibe as the kids today say. Lovely haunting. I could hear this a show where there is some loss, but also just some reflecting going on, some gazing out across landscapes that cause pause. Velvet mining sounds fun, but I'm sure it's challenging too. I would just lay down and nap in the velvet. Cello sounds really great. A good experiment. Love that title.

Supermassive is def a creative and inspirational reverb.  It sounds great with the cello.  Gave me some Clint Mansell Requiem for a dream-vibes with the excellent sound of that cello.  Well done!

The sound you get out of these real cellos is really nice. They really sing. The music saw is a nice addition, like a soprano diva playing along.

The cellos are MASSIVE! This would be a great intro to an Irish or Scottish period film set in the 1700s (I'm watching too much Netflix).  I like the solo cello in the middle.  Your playing sounds great!

Thanks!  I'm not familiar with murcof, but I looked him up and he sounds interesting.  I'll have to check him out.

I think I would enjoy mining velvet more than most other things, but I agree it would be very tempting to slack off.  Thanks!

I've used supermassive on a few tracks this year and I like it.  I think for some reason this is the first time I've tried running the cello through it, but I'm sure it won't be the last.

Thanks!  I spent a lot of time playing cello in my younger days so it's been nice to be able to utilize it quite a bit in WB.  The cello really is a great, expressive instrument and it's been fun experimenting with it in various ways this year.

If Netflix wanted to commission me to soundtrack something like that, I'd be happy to do it!  Thanks for listening!

You can't go wrong with Valhalla!  Great track here and the cellos sound super tasty.

Gorgeous! Really love Valhalla plugins -- this came on while I was finishing up the comment to the previous one and I legit was like "oooh, nice verb, I wonder what's used here" big_smile

Velvet mines, indeed. heart

I've been impressed with everything I've gotten from them so far.  And the fact that supermassive is free is just icing on the cake.

Valhalla for the win!  It sounds good with the cello for sure.  Will have to experiment more with that.
