Dark Elf Dance Academy

By Cosmic Cairns on August 3, 2022 7:25 pm

I had some fun messing around this week.  Let's see... among other things I made a chopped up backwards loop of my friend Bobby singing straight from my week 18 track.  I also tried out for the first time the new reamp box I treated myself to as a birthday gift this year.  I put some distortion on my cello and on a piano and put a couple random effects on my vocal.  I also accidentally got some pretty cool feedback when I was figuring out how to hook up to reamper and didn't have it set up right.  I recorded a little bit of that.  I also got this voice changing toy.  It's intended for children, but I figure I'm basically an overgrown kid at heart and anything that makes cool/weird noises is fair game as far as I'm concerned.  Anyway, there's a little bit of that in there, too.  Like I said, just having fun messing around.

This is so packed with fun ideas. Really enjoyed it!

Awesome man!  Love the chaos in this one.  So many cool sounds going on, sounds like you had a lot of fun on this.

Thanks!  One of those throwing everything at the wall and see what sticks type of tracks.

It was for sure fun to just play around and see what happens.  I think that's a good thing to do sometimes.

so much innovative processing on the voices, and to hear it go so many places was like traveling to different times, all within such a short time, like an expertly navigated voyage propelled by winds of spontaneity.

I am extremely partial to the introductory materials in this, but I really love the variety, the rave-synth stuff I think works overtime here: humorous, dark, and fun af.

Also, I think kids toys in adult hands is quite a perfect combo. Intended for children/schmildren -- I will rob a child of a sound making toy without batting an eye, because smart kids will always choose chocolate and naughty ones can always be distracted by mayhem.

Woah this one is jam packed full of ear candy!  Really cool use of the reverse loop and especially enjoy that fx change at 2:31 with the vocal break.  For a sec thought I was listening to some old school beastie boys ala sure shot with the cool fx transition.  Well done!

Thank!  I tried to cover a lot of ground in a relatively short time with this one.  Hopefully we went to some fun places!

I've assembled a little collection of supposed children's toys over the years all in the service of making music.  I have no shame about it.  Plus I purchased them all on the up-and-up.  I've never robbed a child of anything either.  Worst case scenario I may have "borrowed" a toy for its sound making potential but I gave it back when I was done.

It didn't occur to me, but there is a little bit of Beastie Boys feel to it for sure.

I applaud the experience! It sounds like you were unleashed in a room full of toys and the only constraint was that you have to use ALL OF THEM. The mid-section with the vintage synth and you singing on top of it is fun, it's like the epic battle music of an RPG game from another dimension. The ending with the baroque like hapsichord playing is another southpaw move. Bravo!

YES for having fun and especially being a kid at heart, that's the secret. This is fun for all ages, cool ideas. Love the backwards sounds. Fun stuff happening. Great title. I think I would attend that academy for at least a day or two, it might get too dark and elfy. But if we got to play with fun noise toys, I'd stay.

I like that idea as a songwriting challenge.  Having no idea what toys you will find, but being required to utilize all of them somehow.

There should be more academies that let you just play with fun noise toys.  And hopefully they would have a large collection of them.

what is the toy????

that intro loop is so ridiculously good, can I sample that?

Great track!   Really like that intro with a cool mesh of sounds and ideas and it heads into chaotic electronica warehouse vibes.  The slightly driven ending is cool too.  Cello and distortion is always a great idea.  big_smile

It's this:  https://www.amazon.com/Toysmith-Changer-6-5-Inch-Various-Colors/dp/B000FK3WDC

And 100% for sure yeah you can sample the intro.  Would love to see what you do with it.

Thanks!  Embracing the chaos is fun once in a while for sure.  And cello and distortion mix together really nicely.  I'll have to play with it more.

The cello with distortion is super heavy! I imagine this song to be a digital transcript of your entire life from start to this present moment in a condensed 3:52 format. Sounds like a lot of fun was had... and happy birthday if I missed it. Is the reamp box an amp emulator?

Thanks!  My birthday was a few weeks ago now, but I'm just now trying out the reamp box.  It's a new thing for me.  I was kind of looking for something different and I found an article about mixing with guitar pedals using a reamper.  I was intrigued by this so I decided to try it out.  Basically it lets you run any track you've already recorded through a guitar effects pedal (or multiple pedals as the case may be) and then you can record that onto a new track.  You can then replace the original or blend it in with the original or do whatever you want with it.  I need to play with it more but I'm intrigued by the possibility of running cello, saw, vocals, etc. through various guitar effects and seeing what happens.

an experimental flood. you passed the exam. bravo

Thanks!  I think I had a little experimentation I needed to get out of my system!  smile
