Chasing Falling Stars

By Cosmic Cairns on June 28, 2022 6:45 pm

I have two cello bows, but one of them has been pretty much useless for years because all the hair fell out of it.  I wasn't in a hurry to do anything about it since I had the other bow, but this year the second bow started rapidly losing hair as well, so I decided to go ahead and get both bows re-haired.  And then I realized that the rest of my cello could use some long overdue maintenance as well so as long as I was getting the bows done I decided to bring the cello into the shop as well.  I ended up having a new bridge put on, new tuning pegs installed, put on new strings, had a "wolf eliminator" installed, and sealed up some seams in it that have come open over the years.

It ended up not exactly being a cheap fix, but I decided to just go for it.  I kind of forgot, it's actually a decently nice cello.  They were admiring it at the shop.  I remember now my cello teacher in high school located it and urged that I get it because it was a really good cello for the asking price.  I think an old lady had it just sitting in her closet and agreed to let it go fairly inexpensively.

So anyway, I'm not playing as seriously as I did in high school and college when I was taking lessons and was involved in orchestras, but I still want to do right by the cello and take care of it. And I try to use it decently often during the course of WB.  I just got it back from the shop, so I figured I should do a cello heavy track this week.

I wanted to do some vocals, but didn't really want to think about what's been going on in the world since that's been weighing on me too much already, so the lyrics are more of an escapist thing about going wherever the falling stars lead you.

No city lights and the sky's dark tonight
Feeling the pull of a trillion worlds
Nowhere at all in particular to go
Seeing whatever the fates will unfurl

And we'll travel onward and it's forward ho!
It's a long ways out there, it's a long way home

Our destination is still an unknown
Just chasing after all the falling stars
Where we end up is a matter of chance
Might be Antarctica, might be on Mars

And we'll travel onward...

Keeping an eye out for bright streaks of light
Pointing the way to the next place to go
And in the end it'll turn out all right
I don't know how, but I know that it's so

And we'll travel onward...

It's great to have the cello on this track. I like the backstory that some of these instruments have. I remember going to a shop for violins - all these instruments were on display, showing where they were made and who owned them. A lot of them were more than a century old. Regardless of the sound, which might not even compare to modern made instruments, they had so much soul, so many stories in them, and that's what music is about. A cello in the cellar of an old lady, who may have had some fantastic back stories, who you grew with, and you refurbished, etc. And one day another person in the future will be playing it and will wonder through what kind of adventures it went, to what tracks it contributed... Maybe this cello will be used by a future owner for Weekly Beats 2122!

Great backstory, and yes, I can hear that your cello loves you and your graceful restoration. this song came out to be very beautiful with a strong sentimental touch, but still with hope... well done CosmicCairns.

Yeah!  I really hope my cello lives long after me and continues to be played by someone else 100 years from now.  I like the idea that I'm not its owner but its current caretaker.

Thanks!  It really kind of was a restoration.  It needed quite a bit of work, but it should be a lot better for it.

The cello recorded nicely along with the vocals.  I like how the rest of 'the band' is kind of in the distance.  Cello is a great instrument.

Thanks!  Yeah, I really wanted to make sure the cello was in the forefront of this track.  It really is a wonderful instrument.  I'm not sure I fully appreciated that in my younger days, but now I'm really glad I have it.

Very pretty, maybe don't go that hard on the crash, but sounds very well all together.

The cello never sounded better.  Definitely a good investment! Real solid production and mix.  Love those cello slides!  nice effect.

Thanks!  You're probably right about the crash.  I was just enjoying the energy of it.

Yeah, in theory the cello should be sounding much, much better.  I don't think I had changed the strings on it in 25 years or maybe more.  Although when I was reminded of how much cello strings cost, I definitely want to milk them for as long as I can.

Suhweet I can totally relate to your bows lol .  My hair be gone too tongue
The cello sounds awesome in the mix and the lyrics very relatable.. "Feeling the pull of a trillion worlds"  Indeed!
I liked the outro theme especially from the cello.  Nice work!

Cello sounds great. It's excellent that you have so much you can add to your tracks depending on how you feel or what the song calls for.

Hair loss is just one of those things that happens.  To bows as well as people.  My bows ended up having a hair transplant, which is good since they really don't function without it.  It was nice to highlight the cello this week.  Thanks for listening!

Thanks!  I've collected a fairly large number of instruments/noise makers over the years and it's for sure nice to have a lot of different options to choose from.

Conductor: "Excellent audition."
Cellist: "Thank you!"
Conductor: "But we can't use you."
Cellist: "wh-what??!?!?"
Conductor: "Your playing has too much wolf.  Goodbye.  Security, escort this person out of the building immediately."
Cellist: *in tears* "One day, I'm going to invent something that ensures that this never happens to anyone ever AGAIN!"

That's very likely how they came to be invented in the first place.  Seriously though it's been so long since I've had my cello in a shop or played with actual serious orchestra people that I forgot wolfs were even a thing, let alone that they needed to be eliminated.
