Banished From Xanadu

By Cosmic Cairns on May 25, 2022 8:48 pm

This week I tried to take a little bit of inspiration from the last two Talk Talk albums, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock.  I wasn't trying to exactly replicate them,  but I've always admired the sense of patience those albums possess and their usage of silence and minimalism to great effect.   I always feel like I want to pile on more and more stuff and I often feel antsy if I feel like there's not enough going on.  But in a way it's more impressive to me if you can make something interesting with minimalism.

That's not to say there's not a lot going on here.  I included a lot of different instruments to get a lot of different textures including cello, musical saw, harmonica, synths, guitar, bass, drums, and virtual brass and woodwinds.  I wanted to challenge myself to include some passages where only one or two instruments are playing at a time.  There are also a couple passages where pretty much everything is playing at the same time, but I'm hoping the "less is more" sections make the "more is more" passages impact even harder.  That's the theory anyway.

In other news I forgot to mention I released an album a couple weeks ago!  It consists of songs I did for WB 2020, but I went and took another crack at remixing all of them so in theory they sound a little better than they did the first time you might have heard them.  If you want to check it out it's on my bandcamp page here:

and I also finally figured out how to get stuff onto spotify and youtube so you can find it there, too, if you want.

I like the experiment and the variety of instruments you brought into this track! Special mentions to the cello and the saw!

Cool that you remixed your 2020 tracks - just went there and got your album! smile

I'm trying to incorporate cello and saw as much as I can.  Also, thanks for getting my album!  Much appreciated!

there you go with a Mark Hollis spirit. (RIP). you catched the natural sounds of your instruments very well. what he did, was to capture the room with his microphones too and having different displacements of the recorded instruments in the mix. How he created those dynamics is still a mystery to me. this track is a CosmicCairns classic, that is for sure. and thank you for the link to your new album. Congratulations.

congrats on the release!

I enjoy the way it always feels like there's something interesting to listen to as the track continues on. As someone who is about as minimal as it gets recently, it's something I enjoy listening to because it's entirely lacking in my own stuff. Really cool. smile

Awesome man, love this one!  Definitely digging the contrast between busy and sparse parts, it totally helps the big parts hit harder.

Congrats on putting the album out too!  Looking forward to listening.  Gave you a follow on there and on youtube too.

Thanks!  I remember reading somewhere that Mark Hollis would also bring in guest musicians, have them improvise for like an hour or something, and then only use a 2 second snippet of their performance in the final song.  He was definitely some kind of mad genius.

Thanks!  I felt like the only way I could not get too antsy about the minimalism was to have a lot of variety with it.  And also to have a couple not-minimalist sections.  But I'm seeing the appeal of minimalism.  I might have to try it some more.

I feel like having some contrasting sections in songs is almost never a bad thing.  Depends on what you're going for I guess, but overall it's a neat little trick.  Thanks for the follows!  Much appreciated!

I like your stuff when there's stuff going on.

I like your thinking on the less is more and more is more. I have hard time with minimalism too, I pile things on, which is fun, but a good practice to peel back too. Love the beat you have going, the strings sound awesome, really carries this, I'm swaying in place and very wrapped up in what you have going here. Wow that saw, oh yes! Good piece!

Will get your album and follow you!

I think it's good to be aware there's room for minimalism and maximalism in music and that both can actually complement each other.  Thanks!

I am such a sucker for musical saw, it's gorgeous sounding. I think the drums sound great, but I feel the spirit of the track is in these duets you've set out to accomplish, the cello + musical saw interlude between the 2nd and 3rd minute is one of my favorite WB2022 moments OF ALL TIME -- I would listen to just that and be swayed in its waves. (None of this should take away from the joy of the musical saw hoedown and that absolute genius of an ending.) This is excellent.

Thanks!  I've been trying to make sure I include the musical saw in a good percentage of my tracks this year.  Perhaps one of these weeks I'll do some kind of extended cello and musical saw duet.

Oh man, I really love those two Talk Talk albums. Ascension Day is such a classic track. I can hear the approach and trusting yourself arranging compositions with maybe a bit more space in some parts. Love the sparse parts but also dig it when you get into a real groove here. Congrats on the album release too.

The cello & musical saw sound quality is awesome.  A very cinematic opening and good pace throughout especially when the drums are driving the track.  Well done!

Very zen-like sound... what ever that means (making stuff up!).  I guess it is in the delivery being sparse and off kilter as the layers roll in.  Also, maybe it's because the strings and saw sound like Asian instrument sets rather than western.  The stop and start phrasing makes me feel like the song is asking questions. Love the mix and variety of instruments and motifs.  Very post-pop.

I have never listened to Talk Talk but a friend of mine is a total fanatic so maybe I should check out their stuff.  He is an audio engineer and has pretty good taste.

Thanks!  I was happy with how the sparse parts came out, but it was easier to do them knowing I was going to bust into the bigger parts as well.  I agree, Ascension Day is awesome.

Thanks!  It was nice to showcase the cello and saw on their own a little bit.

Thanks!  And Talk Talk is definitely worth checking out.  They have a really interesting trajectory.  They started out as pretty typical 80's synthpop (Gwen Stefani even does a cover of one of their songs from this period).  Their third album is transitional.  It's still nominally pop but you can feel them pushing at the boundaries.  And then on their last two albums they pretty much invent post-rock and do an incredible job of it.

Wow Ethan. You are on fire (again)! You got mad multi-intrumentalist (guitar, saw, cellos, synths, etc) skills going on and this Is quite a ride. (This is my 2nd time here).

Got a lot of instruments, gotta let 'em loose sometimes.

Gotta set 'em free, E!
