Song for Tarek

By Collet on January 12, 2014 7:29 pm

This song is a tribute to Tarek Bouazizi, which burned himself alive, and triggered the revolutions in Tunisia and in the arabic world.
I play the turkish oud and the frame drum. No editing, just raw recordings and a quick mix.
Comments welcome !

Fantastic! I can feel the pain and suffering of the people of the Arabic world from the key and the progressions. Very suitable tribute to he, who was a brave man and moved many to revolt.

That scale

Super in love with this : )

The oud is one of my favorite instruments. Lovely work.

Oh that tuning.  Gets me every time.  Loving this.  Makes me really want to hunt down a Turkish oud!  Beautiful track - probably one of the best I've heard on weekly beats.  And well recorded too mate.  Looking forward to more of this.

Very cool!

Many thanks for your input !
The scale is close to the mode named "Ussak", which has a low and down attracted second (between minor and major 2th). Then in the second part, it modulates to "Hijaz", which the mode oftenly associated with oriental music (minor 2nd, major 3rd). I don't play them exactly in the ottoman classic music way, but just got inspired by it. Normally , those modes have to follow a certain "seyir", meaning a succession of "polar" notes.
Really glad you enjoy this track, it's a very personal one.
Resources about Turkish modal music in english are quite rare, so you may want to check out his book : http://www.ortav.com/sunshop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=415

Wow, great composition and sound.

Great performance, what mic / pre / chain where you using?

Thc ! I am on the move : just a zoom h4n internal mic used as an audio interface !

so gentle. love it. thanks!

Thanks for this. A very emotional composition and story.

A fine tribute. Such a clear recording too. Really great.

this is a truly great track, and a worthy tribute in some way. self immolation is the ultimate protest. here in chicago, a man named malachi ritscher immolated himself pretty close to an interstate so i'm sure some people had a very weird day. the local media totally ignored it at first, as it was around the iraq war and it was a protest of that. eventually they came out and called it a cowardly act, which is totally dishonorable on their part. the guy was the biggest supporter of the local improvised jazz scene and recorded many of the shows. he is sorely missed by any remnants of that scene. not to take away from who you listed, but this reminded me of him as an improviser myself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malachi_Ritscher it is sad that in other companies something like this can induce riots, and in America, "land of the free", it is attempted censorship then discrediting... and no one seemed to care much about it.

p.s., I'm also a big fan of the oud! have you ever heard of this american band, secret chiefs 3? I'm a big fan of them.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts George. You're right, Democracy gives the possibility to express but also not to be heard... Too much power belongs to the entity that makes the selection between important and secundary : mass media.
I am currently watching secret chiefs 3 live in Paris. Never heard before, very interesting approach to mixing rock and traditional eastern music.

very into this, thank you

Works really well. I enjoyed the listening experience, particularly the space and the absence of an "arch" form that can be so prevelant
