improv 2 — geometric knights

By Coauctor on January 14, 2018 11:19 am

Improvising for Weekly Beats. My self-imposed limitations:

1. Digital piano as an input device (Yamaha P35)
3. Moderately limited warm up before the recording
4. No edits after the recording is done
2. Four VSTs for the year, one for each season

Winter VST: Mikro Prism by Native Instruments

Why am I doing this? To explore improvisation as a tool of being present here and now.

This improv went longer than I expected. It's also more rough on the edges than the first one.
I imagine geometric knights brawling on a sun-drenched chessboard meadow when listening to this.

Listened all and enjoyed!

this tickled my ears in a most pleasant way.

i really like the meditative/introspective/seasonal concept. tasty tasty improv in any case! very nice work

pretty unique in sound design, and the melody had me from the get go. yes a bit lengthy though.

The self-imposed limitations are an interesting device and the results are impressive.  I like the sound of this a lot and agree it has an appealing melody.

Solid work. A bit like ELP.

Glad you like my concept! Hope it will be fruitful for the whole year. It’s really exciting to do an introspection this way.

Thanks! Micro Prism is cool with this “crystal” sound. Yeah, I could make it shorter and more focused. Need to internalize this feeling of focus. When you know where do you wanna go in the next bar / part / improv.

Pretty useful device so far, thanks!

This is quite surprising since I never listened to these guys! The only thing I know they were freaking virtuosos knifing keys when it’s hot. Thanks!

Suddenly! Need to check out these guys then. Maybe they’ve explored everything in this harmony field already.

Wow, thanks for saving the track.

Really enjoy the theming/restrictions! At first I was mildly iffy on the actual improvisation, but once I read the mental image of geometric knights, somehow it became exactly right? I think framing can be a very useful thing (I often use it in the names of my songs), and I think your use here really puts the song in the proper light, almost as a story being recounted of a great geometric battle.

Thanks for reminding me of a framing! I often ignore it for some reason. Maybe because I want people to generate their own imagery. But framing can actually help people imagine greater things. I think I will start sharing mental images from now on.

Looking forward to it!

Very cOoL! Don't really know what it reminds me of... maybe some experimental 70s short film with scenes of driving into Hollywood with random Dracula snippets... like it smile

mmmm love that thick drive on the keys. Beautiful, almost woodwind type tone.

Nice melody comes out of this! I love your plan to work with limitations, I have been thinking about doing the same, maybe something different each week mostly with goal of not overthinking things. Also love idea of focusing on improvising to be in the here and now. Music is a meditation.

Thanks, nice imagery! Sometimes I dive into this kinda old 70s sound, yeah.

Thank you! Gravitating towards heavy distortion with this one.

Thanks for picking up the words! Yep, it's about less analytical thinking, exploring more, kinda meditating. Would be cool to hear you improvising.

really nice piece - again - loving the sound tone of the instrumentation - the change ups were nice & flowed well - i'm feeling the chill 1970's vibes here too!

Lovely atmo, and i really like the dirty sound character.
Great improvisational Work!

Thanks! Nice, I'm glad people got something for themselves which I didn't have in mind when recording (chill vibes).

Thank you! Sometimes I'm all about this dirt and noise. It's a pleasure to distort something.
