Times Been (Final)

By Chrisfoo on October 18, 2020 11:43 pm

Spent the weekend working on getting this song that I uploaded here a couple months back into album ready condition.  I was really pumped on how this song turned out the first time so I didnt feel the need to make any drastic changes, but the main issue I had with it was that it was too cold/digital sounding and wouldn't fit with the other songs on the album.  So basically I added some guitar chords in a few places, redesigned the bass sound so it wasnt so over-the-top synth bassy, and fixed some areas where the vocals sounded too flex-tuned or harsh.  I also was on the fence about the electronic drum kit I used for the first version so I blended it with a sampled kit and EQed out the low end on the electronic kit.  My ears are definitely bias towards the end result now after listening to this all weekend, so please let me know if you hear anything that sounds off.

This is rad, man. I really like it. I'm curious to go back and listen to the original for comparison's sake now, but I adore the outro.

I remember this one from earlier.  I don't know what all is different, but since you mentioned drum and bass I think they both sound good.  Not too synthy sounding to me, although the lead synth line is super cool and scratches the synth itch all by itself.

The synth arpeggios have a daft punk vibe. The drum and bass set a solid basis for the track. Good vocal work! The guitars are great, as always!

Thanks, glad you like this one!  Yeah, that outro is a but different from the original version too.  I extended it a bit and added a few more layers.

Thanks!  Glad to hear they dont sound too synthy.  Nothing against super synthy bass though, love it but it would have been too big a contrast from the rest of the songs I'm putting out.

I certainly remember the original because of the super catchy vocals and harmonies.  This has a bit more of a polished sound.  But I can't really choose, I enjoyed both versions lol.

Very crisp and crunchy! Nice work.

Love the song Foo. Take this as constructive criticism (from a drummer), but I do think the beat/drums fall a bit flat for how incredible the rest of your composition is. I feel like I probably crank them up a bit much as thats what I like. I would recommend trying to manually raise some of the low end kick EQ and mid/high end snare to make them pop a bit more in the track. I want to 'feel' the song a bit more.

I love this song - liked the old version, but cool additions with the drums!

I agree with Mr. Sauce.  I might compress the drums a bit, and then raise the volume.  Why did you EQ out the low end?  I might also compress the vocals a little as well.

Great track overall though!!!!!!!

Haha, thanks dude.  Glad they both work.

Thanks dudes!  This is definitely good feedback.  I just spent the evening remixing to make the drums hit a bit harder and I'm definitely digging the changes already.  I appreciate it!

Also, Orangedrink, I dont think I did a good job of explaining what I changed with the drums.  I blended two kits (one electronic, one acoustic) and EQed out a good deal of the low end only on the electric kit to try and give it the feel of an acoustic kit but keep some of that pizazz of the electronic kit.

oh cool, nice!  try doing the opposite and see what you think!

electronic: low end
acoustic: high end

I kind of want to do disco drums in the future, and I think i'm going to do an electronic kick on top of my acoustic kit (in theory, I don't know what it will end up sounding like)

Good song! Killer vocals and lyrics. Yeah agree with above, could be cool to make those drums bigger boom boom. And what orange drink said about the high low end maybe

For sure dude. That 'kick to your chest' feeling lives in the low ends so you cant be too aggressive and just immediately high pass it.

I use this as a reference when mixing as a reminder of where all the drums live (especially kick and snare) and then I tend to season to taste based on the tune. Check it out man.

The song has become a song for the album as it was meant to be. Well done.

Hell yeah, sounding nicely polished! Super transparent mix, great stuff.

For sure!  Yeah, I didnt do a good job explaining it, but I didnt filter out all the low end on the drums, just on the electronic kit.  I left the lows on the acoustic kit to give it a warmer, less electronic sound.  It definitely wasn't enough oomph though like you guys said!

woke up this morning with this song stuck in my head! smile

Beautiful work! Neat to hear a new take on an old favorite. wink

Such a cool style. Awesome job!

The mix is sounding awesome! Love the vocal effects and that arp has such a strong hook to it. The call and response between the main vocal and the effected vocal in several parts is a great production trick. The bass and drum mix is really tight (not boomy) and is a great compliment to the bigger wide sound of the guitars and vocals. Love it and faved!

Thanks man!  That ping pong delay effect is from the Soundtoys plugin Pan Man.  Got it super cheap this summer in their effect rack for a covid special.

Amazing. I heard the opening melody while reading your description and knew this was a song I heard before. I love the way the updated version turned out. The fluffy bass does its job well (and the pitch down that happens at the end of a couple phrases is a nice touch). Very spacious.
