Bitter Soup

By Catthew O. on January 31, 2016 11:52 pm

Went light on the hardware this week. Mostly used freeware soft synth AUs and the EXS24 sampler (loaded with drum hits, waveforms, instrument sounds, and noise I created with circuit bent electronics, guitar pedals running into themselves, and digital processing) with a few supporting roles played by the Roland XV5080, Alesis SR-16, and Roland JP8080. I did also make use of an old soundfont that I made of my voice when I was 18 or so, before I knew the beauty of just using samplers for that.

The thing about writing swing in Logic, is that while it can quantize to various forms of digital swing, it does not (to the best of my knowledge) provide a way to view the grid as your chosen form of swung. So, in order to achieve that effect, I've always just written to triplets. I mean... it's not right, but it's also not TOTALLY wrong! If there's a way to change that grid into swing or five and seven tuplets though, holy cow let me know!

This was a real shitty week. Unhappy with my circumstances, but it would be a waste to just give up and throw everything away, right? Just like making bitter soup.
Besides, it's good for ya.

Sorry for the shitty week, but this sounds awesome. Great work! I can't do swing to save my life.

Amazing grooves!

sweet soup

Love the voice samples. This is so full of energy ヾ(0∀0*★)゚*・.。

Hope you days improve. In the meantime, your track rocks. It has a certain late 80's action anime feeling... and great way of achieving swing, by the way smile

Late 80's action anime yes!! Man, I can't believe you make these tracks in a week (I mean I do believe it, and I'm impressed). I'm sold

V bouncy and well mastered bass there.  Good tune man!!  Great poly-rythems that chill right out.  And vocal sample playing a melody!!!  Hehehe.  One of the most original weekly beat workouts I've heard :-)

all those notes wake me up and all that bass makes me FUNK

Thank you! Yeah, it's a trick I learned from teaching and being unable how to explain swing to really young kids who didn't just get it implicitly. I think I may have learned it from a student who somewhat incorrectly just called swing the same as triplets. I feel like computer swing on this level has a level of swagger and even sinister arrogance unique to the medium

Aw, thank you! Being technically unemployed helps, haha. For what it's worth, my process for most music these days is usually to dedicate an entire day to the composition, spruce it up throughout the night, and then use the next couple of days to figure out what I didn't do right and make the form more dynamic.

I wonder what's making people think of 80s anime! I guess I can't hide my influences no matter what tongue

cool When the first thing you do when you wake up would be described as "FUNK"ing (all caps, specifically) it's gonna be a good day.

Soup for days!

HAAAAAA! Can't stop liking your music!!!
