Multi, Unus

Back for week two! When approaching this week, my intention was to try to quickly identify what to work with using a visual. I tried scatter plotting various gear/techniques against how proficient if felt or frequently I used them. While that helped me hone in on somethings, but in the end I went, to quote what

That led me to a Torso S4 I picked up not too long ago. I would not classify myself as a "sample person," so much so, that I don't even know what I mean by that, other than I don't have a lot of experience with creating my own samples and using them outside of sampled drums kits.

A while back, while learning modular with VCV Rack, I created a patch with clocked noise sources going into some filters. That sequenced with a little randomness and ratcheting provided a kind of "microsound" drum beat that I usually gravitate towards.

As this was the only non-factory sample on the S4, I decided I'd try to create a whole song from this single sample. This was hard, as you can hear from the song's main "beat", the sample was essentially all clicks. I leaned heavily on the S4's resonant filter, which can be very recognizable, but I decided to work with within the constraints I laid down.

That's where the title comes from, "Many, one" in latin because

If you made it to the end of this, or the song, thanks for listening and sorry for the length on both! I ran out of time to edit down the performance other than to come in under 16mb.

The result of the clicks going through resonant filters is really good! Also really fits well with the bells. You created a wonderful atmosphere here. It reminds me a bit of the game music that Floex composes (and I mean that as a big compliment, because I love his work! smile). I hope this track doesn't awake more GAS in me...

Thanks for listening! The bell-like sounds are also clicks going through filters/fx too, everything is! tongue It's kind of wild how far away from the sound source you can get with the S4 quickly. Moderation seems to be the right approach most of the time, but with a single sample constraint I was sweating for ideas.

I've got Floex followed on Bandcamp, I'll give their work a listen, thanks for the rec/compliment. Let me know if you have any questions on the S4, happy to help you determine if it's a good fit for you.

Thanks for the offer! I am going to keep that in mind. For now I trying to force myself to stick to the great devices that I already have and try to master them. I have looked at the Torso S4 many times on youtube. smile

Nice to read that everything is built from the clicks. Makes the track even more impressive to me!

That patch sounds really interesting. I love the idea. The resonator filter sounds great. I am always surprised what can be done with the S4. The results are delightful.

woah i def knew nothing about the Torso S4 but i do now!  Such a calming atmosphere throughout.  This felt like i was floating along a river.  Enjoy the length of the track as is and the details as well.  \m/

It was a fun challenge to build around. It's one of my favorite devices to pick up and get somewhere quickly.
