The Gwrach

Back again for week three!

Another dip into experimenting with noise, although this time around I decided to let my house do most of the heavy lifting. I the goal I had in mind for this one was rather straight forward, and that is being scared of the dark.
Trying to capture the creeks and groans of a house settling at night, and how much a childs mind can exaggerate those sounds. I was also particularly inspired by an episode of the Magnus Archives,#86:Tucked in.

Once again I made the primary drone track using a five string ran direct and layering effects, while for additional effects and sounds I recorded my own empty office and my sons baby monitor while he was napping, along with using an office chair for some extra noise. Also threw in some nice schlocky spoken word for the hell of it.

Maybe next week I'll make one about puppies or something. Probably not!

I'm going to do the honorable thing and listen to this in the dark. Just a moment, setting stuff up, gotta get immersed.
It gives me this dual feeling of relaxation and tension. Obviously pretty polarizing positions, but I think that works in the context of darkness. Like laying down in a dark room when you're exhausted can be the best feeling, but also the darkness is scary when you think too long on it. In this song, it's that modulating white noise that is almost like the relaxing sound of a fan or something, but then it's interspersed with the metallic clangs of what I presume is the chair and it reinforces the tension, especially once the creepy whispers slide in. Very skinamarink in vibes.
Oh and then A Clean Steel Table played immediately afterwards and fucking scared the shit out of me. If you ever release a drone album, put that shit IMMEDIATELY after this track, it works, haha.

dude, im scuuurd. Listening to it in the dark sounds fun, maybe ill play it randomly tonight while me and the wife are in bed and see how that goes haha

The patience and restraint really gives the sounds a chance to breath, created a suitably creepy feel.  Nice one

Wow this is so tense sounding! Really really creepy. The different sounds in this one that come in and out of focus are really interesting. I think I might listen to this one in the dark or on a night walk as well. Nice job!

Ditto. This track does not need a jump scare, it reminds us that the scariness is already all around us. Refreshing sounds for a WB, thank you!
