Active Dream Life

By Avarine on July 1, 2018 11:50 am

Ermagerrrd we are officially halfway through the year! I am super proud that I haven't skipped a week. Yisss!

Despite the name, I do not in fact, have an active dream life. Not one that I remember, anyway. I am very good at sleeping. I fall asleep almost immediately. I can pretty much sleep anywhere at will. It's kind of a superpower. I guess it's also a weakness too because if I don't get enough sleep, the tiredness I feel the next day is seriously debilitating! Sometimes I get so tired in the middle of the day it hurts to keep myself awake. I have to stand up and walk around for fear of falling asleep at work sitting in a chair.

So anyway, I've got my Mama staying with me this month, so my ability to spread out with synths and microphones and make lots of noise is very limited. I made this completely in headphones. I started off with drums, choosing drum hit sounds that I normally avoid - big, messy hits. Then I played around with some newly acquired free synth plugins. I've been really enjoying MicroKorg for bass sounds. I chose this bpm as a challenge to myself because I usually avoid this tempo range.

When I was younger I was really into DnB, and while I have nothing against the genre, to me it sounds like the past. It reminds me of my juvenile self. Eurgh. The drums and tempo in this track make it sound like poorly done DnB, which I feel pretty cringey about! Now that this little experiment is over I don't plan on revisiting these elements.

Always good to expand your sonic horizons (even if, in this case, they're constricted into headphone space).

Crappy DnB works for me. I'm not a huge fan of it anyway.

i don't go to sleep well or sleep easily & i have a super active dream life... perhaps these things relate?

this piece is super fun!
