Most of this week was spent setting up my Akai MPD232 midi controller (not MPC) to work with FL Studio. I found it has AFTERTOUCH! To learn how to make sounds, I took patches from the Jupiter-8V and Serum presets from Shirobon.

Since I feel comfortable on the Arturia Jupiter 8-V, I moved onto learning the Arturia CS-80V. The CS-80 was underwhelming on a keyboard, but with the Aftertouch from the MPD232 midi controller the sound was completely different. You can hear the modulation created by pressing the pad harder or relaxing pressure from a background sound that seems to speed up and slow down.

This week I worked on:
Layering kick drums
Side-chaining kick to bass
Creating drum patterns (learned "4-to-the-floor")
Widening sounds (with phaser and reverb combo-wombo)
Instrumentation - fewer but more dense sounds
Arrangement
CS-80 synth
Not limiting/compressing/crushing the hell out of my song for once.

I did less  compression on tracks, lesson EQing (due to time constraints) and more thoughtful FX application and I feel this is the clearest and most well composed track I've made yet, and with the fewest instruments.

Dude this track is a banger. Lots of variation and it all fits together nicely, and I love the distorted bass; gives the track a great sense of texture. The drums feel really nice in the mix, too. Are you happier with them this time around?

Woah! Banger! Love the drum programming. Mix sounds great, with nice separation between the leads, drums, bass!

Yeah?! Thanks. I've finally put together a track I can say I really like. The others had good things, but this has been the first track where I felt I made something, you know? I didn't make deformed clones of Eminem; I made a baby.

I do like the drum. While I neglected the padded drum sound, which is used in sections to foil the thwack-kick sections, I like how the drums turned out overall. I finally heard the difference in sound when side-chaining the kick to the bass, and I liked it.

Thanks! Though I didn't have a day or two to listen to the track on different devices and couldn't EQ everything in relation to the other instruments, I'm glad that it turned out how it did. Thanks for the feedback on separation. That was a big issue. I received good feedback on panning instruments under 60% L or R, and it worked.

The mixing on thiis is so good. Love the variation in melodies and synths!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm working on creating clearer mixes and more interesting sounds.

This song is a journey.

Wow, thick raw sounds! Power jam... love the filter modulation and those leads. Quite a production!

The CS-80 is a beast (just Vangelis).  Really enjoyed how that bassline fit in so nicely with the drums.  The arpy lines are even cooler.  Excellent mix of all the synths and drums.  Well done!
