Most of this week was spent setting up my Akai MPD232 midi controller (not MPC) to work with FL Studio. I found it has AFTERTOUCH! To learn how to make sounds, I took patches from the Jupiter-8V and Serum presets from Shirobon.
Since I feel comfortable on the Arturia Jupiter 8-V, I moved onto learning the Arturia CS-80V. The CS-80 was underwhelming on a keyboard, but with the Aftertouch from the MPD232 midi controller the sound was completely different. You can hear the modulation created by pressing the pad harder or relaxing pressure from a background sound that seems to speed up and slow down.
This week I worked on:
Layering kick drums
Side-chaining kick to bass
Creating drum patterns (learned "4-to-the-floor")
Widening sounds (with phaser and reverb combo-wombo)
Instrumentation - fewer but more dense sounds
Arrangement
CS-80 synth
Not limiting/compressing/crushing the hell out of my song for once.
I did less compression on tracks, lesson EQing (due to time constraints) and more thoughtful FX application and I feel this is the clearest and most well composed track I've made yet, and with the fewest instruments.
