Bleed Your Idols

By alonemusic on March 3, 2024 8:43 pm

So.. its been a long while since I wrote a proper 'song'. In the spirit of listening to a lot of Idlewild this week, and wanting to play my guitar, I said "can I write a song in half a day, that is under 3 minutes?"
Turns out, yes, I can, but damn do I struggle mixing vocals! Anyway.. this is the first song in 3 WBs to have my voice up front and centre, so thats new, I think its the first song I've actually recorded for weekly beats. I hope you enjoy it! It was fun to do! I guess I should put the lyrics below..

---
Bleed Your Idols
---

By design its hard to repeat
All the signs that you need
To speak so clearly
All above the noises of the night don't fight
Don't fight
Please shine a light
Find a sound that we can hide between
A sound that keeps us running

Alarm is raised
A thousand lights flashing
A hundred lives lining your way back
Bleed your idols
Bleed the eyelids dry
And be safe at home inside

Sleep aligns with the times we find
the sun won't rise
the sun won't find the skin
won't find the heat within
No perfect colour
Stark white
No night
No promise made
Just a part of the fiction we decide

Alarm is raised
A thousand lights flashing
A hundred lives lining your way back
Bleed your idols
Bleed the eyelids dry
And be safe at home inside

It takes our hearts away
and takes care of the sound
Takes our knowing glances
at the mess we crowned

Alarm is raised
A thousand lights flashing
A hundred lives lining your way back
Bleed your idols
Bleed the eyelids dry
And be safe at home inside

Great guitar tone!  Love the vocals and concept :-)   Guitar string effects at end are doooooope.

And yeah, mixing vocals is super hard - I tried the same thing this week and it was a mission.  Especially when everything else is a wall of sound.  Vocals either get slammed with a comp and disappear or end up too up front in the mix.  I found one trick is to hit 'em with a multicomp on the master vocal bus which makes them a bit more of a predicable element.

Super cool production and composition! Nice catchy chorus and general melodies all over! I like the guitar and drums but the vocals could be even better mixed - not sure what could be done, but I guess playing with the sound of them so they fit better with the instruments and the song's vibe. Either that or performing them again with the instrumentation, because then you might adjust your singing to it somehow. But yea it's a tricky one. I usually go a bit overcompressed and use a preamp plugin (uad neve 1073) and play with presets - "Male Vocal" usually adds some bass and indeed kinda makes it more manly-ish, which does good things to my ego altho I'm not sure it makes it really sound better. So preamp -> [optional effects like delay etc] -> compressor -> then a master bus compressor that will ensure they cut thru other noises like drums and instruments.

All that said, your vocals are understandable and clear enough in this mix to enjoy, these are all details to make them really shine. Hope to hear more!

Yes!!! Rock and Roll is number one!

Thank you heart Yeah, Just fitting vocals in the mix was a struggle, and the weekly beats timeline basically means its a 'that'll do'.. will try this next time (and there will be a next time!)

Thank you! I think I really need to get a decent preamp, my mic always sounds thin, I know my voice isn't *that* bassy or strong, but it ain't that thin either big_smile Will certainly give it all a shot next time, thank you heart

Yesssss heart

Very good work, despite the rough vocal mix. Loving the guitars and hopefully you can nail the mix, because then we can learn from that as well when we get to do them.
