dream sequence

By ahhsumx on July 15, 2018 11:39 pm

This week I played rhythm roulette again and drew 3 records blindly from my collection (which is pretty random to begin with). I took a bunch of chops across all the records, though they were mostly all stabs/hits, and I created a few virtual instruments in logic using them. All the sounds here except the kicks, hi hats, and the 2nd snare are samples. Most of which came from the Message To Our Ancestors record, but the sounds for the main loop come from the Oasis record. That sample is very close to a loop of the original, but it has a weird pacing to it so I ended up with an odd number of snare hits, which gives this beat an odd vibe and what reminds me of a dream-like sequence. It grew on me though, sorry if it came out a bit long ultimately.

Lastly, I've been trying to improve my mixing skills so I did my best to balance this one better, and then do a "mastering" round to it. However, I didn't take much of a break between mixing & mastering so it is what it is. Hope you enjoy!

Ingenious random workflow! Definitely dreamlike surrealism.

That gif put to the music is freaking me out!! Well placed!

Hypnotically insistent and, as noted, dreamlike (or should that be nightmarelike?)

Very nice chops, and cool drums... i like the doubled snares and that deep base.
The mastering sounds good to me. Cool that you've not choosed the overloud brickwall way wink
First I thought that the base could have a tiny bit more impact but it highly depends on the headphones you choose.
Really nice dreamy beat!

sorry for the delayed responses everyone!

thanks! that doubled snare is awesome, i actually didn't do that, but that was just how i found it. it'll probably make an appearance in more beats in the future. i think the number one thing i've learned to improve my mixing/mastering is to turn every thing _down_. going louder just makes such a mess! this one wasn't that well balanced across speakers/headphones though, definitely better in headphones as you found out.
