INMI

By Abludo on January 16, 2022 11:18 pm

This song has been long unfinished, and I finally managed to this week by completing the lyrics and re-recording/adding the layers.

This one is about the feeling that tells me I should be doing something more with my life instead of making music. I’ve been in education so long and now it’s over, I feel like my mind is still wanting to find the next goal to achieve. The “song stuck in my head” is representative of this feeling, and so the song is called INMI - essentially the scientific name for an ‘earworm’, or song that gets stuck in your head.

I bought a Fender Stratocaster to celebrate finishing my degree, and this was the first chord pattern I recorded with it. This whole texture is one I’m very happy with - very clean and punchy, and everything works together. The Hofner bass is holding up well in the mix again.

Something interesting about this song is I tried tracking each drum individually but on the same mic setup, which allows for cleaner recordings and mixing, and while it’s not as fun it works very nicely - need to remember to use this technique in the future.

Another thing to note is the main snare is predominantly a sample, which I created with my final year project - a collection of 8000 hits programmed into an interactive sampler to select a snare sound. If anyone has Max for Live and wants this then let me know!

Lyrics:

I said, I’ve got another song stuck in my head
Today, and I don’t think it’s gonna go away
It’s in there nearly every day
I heard, but I don’t think I really know the words
Goes like, “maybe you should do something with your life”
Well, maybe I might

I thought I knew where to go
I got so used to being shown which direction
I want to choose my stepping stones
but misconception is all I really know

Alone, this tune that’s on my mind will never go
At least, right now that’s what it’s looking like to me
It feels like I’m stuck on repeat
And then, when I start to enjoy myself again
I hear, “what are you gonna do for a career”
I said, maybe next year...

I said, I’ve got another song stuck in my head (repeat)

Beautiful song! This could easily get stuck in my head. big_smile
