Woman singing sourced from freesound.org: https://www.freesound.org/people/klankbeeld/, thanks klankbeeld.

I find this kind of piece interesting as it treads the cultural appropriation thing finely. Is it disrespectful/white-person-privelige?

Nonetheless. Spectral processing on voice + stretching + transcription + processing + etc. A tribute of sorts to Gavin Bryars "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet"; I am planning on doing a much more comprehensive piece in that vein with the voices of the homeless in Melbourne, at some stage in the future.

Love the way you're spacing out the musical events; I could drive a truck between them. ::)

Beautiful and spacious!
Interesting question concerning cultural appropriation, personally I do not find this particular use disrespectful since it feels to me like you leave space for and respect the singing.
But on the other hand, with this kind of sourced samples it's hard to say how the original singer would feel about it.
The music is still brilliant, though.

Yeah, it's tricky isn't it? I *assume* that the recordist sought permission for it to go online and did so morally, rather than just taking the recording.

Glad you like the piece!

vocals go really well with the music, love it that you mixed it a bit in the back ... It makes me feel as if something really bad is about to happen, (i mean that as a compliment, I love the way it's sounding so ominous)

Thanks! The vocals are actually the basis of ALL the music. Interesting that you find it ominous! big_smile

There's a really beguiling tension that builds in this track, and it builds so slowly that you're over half way through before you realise the hairs are standing up on the back of your neck. Brilliant!

Yes. All of this. This could adapt really well into a live piece. I want to transcribe that piano part and play it. Piano + tape piece maybe?
