Night and Night

By RawTicks on April 18, 2014 5:30 pm

Not super satisfied with this week entry... I tried something I'm not used to with the mix, and I'm afraid it might lacks bottom end and sound a bit sterile.

I was trying to make a symmetrical composition with two separate parts of the same length and one was going to be Day and the other Night, but both sounded dark at the end, hence the title! Also, I'm feeling a lack of motivation growing on me lately, and I hope it will go away in the next few days...  If you have any comment on the mix (or other aspects of the track), I'd be happy to hear.

Nice transition in the middle, not sure about the tremolo strings (but that might just be because of associations with horror movie music).

I think it works quite well on its own.

Perhaps the way out of inspiration crisis is exactly to do stuff that's outside of your regular MO

Oh really digging this .. electro jitter backdrop with darker underpinnings!

Very nice, I liked the last part in particular, a very nice blend of unsettling beats and scary strings. It does indeed sound very tight and clean, but I think that works very well for the track.

Good for you to experiment and try something different! Come back and listen to it in a few days, and maybe you'll get a better feel for what worked and what didn't. That's what I usually find anyways. And next week you can build on the techniques and ideas that you thought worked out the best.

Re: your mix - All the highs sound too loud and a bit shrill to me, but maybe it's just my headphones. I did like the tremolo strings buried in there though. Pretty good overall!

Sounds cool to me.  I agree they both work as "night" pieces.

I like it! I admit though that I can't really hear the symmetry? Is it just a form thing? A B?
Nice track though.

Thanks for the comment. Regarding the mix, I take notes...

Nice track though.

Ah yes, sorry, I used the word symmetry very loosely there. You're right, it's a two part A B track (so not really symmetric in its form). Both part use the same rhythms, although heavily processed in part 2. Both parts are of the same length in time.

I love reading about your idea and the subsequent melting of the whole track into night! The tremolo string parts are super creepy and atmospheric...and your beats have their trademark sparkle and intricacy big_smile
I'm very impressed by the high-frequency sounds - you've managed to treat them in such a way that they don't become fatiguing or draining after prolonged exposure - nice work!

A definite favourite this week. Hope you get into gear with motivation soon!

The mix sounds extremely crisp and sharp in my ears. And very interesting you shared your idea and approach to this one, too. I'm sure this unusual appraoch will pay off and will lead to new ideas. Absolutely inspiring as always!

Thanks a lot for your comment! Funnily enough, I think we commented on each other's track at the same time!

Thanks! I really like playing with high frequency sounds, might be because my headphones are making them so gorgeous to listen too... (still voting everyday for you man! hope you win that contest!)

the beat is really cool and I love that string sound smile well done!

Yay !!! The violin, I think I used the same sample a long time ago ^^
I love your edits !
