Shimmer

Like with most of my tracks before, i had no real plan when starting this one a few days ago. I started off with a little drum jamming on the iPad, which led to some sort of Minimal stuff. Not my usual taste, but i tried to follow this route. So i built some glitchy elements around it and couldn't resist to add some melodic bits later on. I had not enough time left to tighten the track but on the other hand i think it's ok with this style of music to let it go for some minutes :-)

I'm looking forward to hear what you're thinking!!

Soo...complex...track is...alive! I thought it'd be too much for my tired head to handle right now, til I caught a whiff of those lovely melodies buried deep in the rhythms - I'm amazed by the sheer volume of expression you get just from manipulating beats, without ever losing the listener in their wake. So impressive!

*just made it to the gorgeous outbursts in the last third or so*

*am groovin'* smile

At the risk of sounding repetitive, your stuff rocks!

This one threw me into all sorts of loops, the begginig when those chords hit really spoke to me. Theres some parts im not to much a fan of due to the tonal quality. Like they were in two different keys and i felt as if it was unintentional. Rhythms were tight like a box and everything just sounds so fresh. How do you master your tracks?>

pretty danceable. almost a little to much effects to pass as "minimal" but still nice. I never get people though making music on an ipad wink) ...not until I have bought one for myself wink

near the end and it's getting even nicer!

Great, great sound design and the mix is amazing. Like Mr Mort, I'd be curious to know your tricks for mastering...

Another great track and I'll say it again...your cover art is soo sweeet.

Great track, not sure if I'd describe the end result as minimal though, but an impressive amount of details both in the rhythmic and the melodious elements that make the music both entertaining and interesting. Good work!

totally delectable sound quality, pretty interesting arrangement. reminded me a bit of cevin key's download project, but less gothy I guess.

ooooh i love the glitchy organic sounds in the beginning.  It def does remind me a bit of Download's work. I love the change with the piano chords toward the middle.  It has a dark yet optimistic sound to it.  Push on!  The overall sense of the track has a revolving and interweaving feel to it, which I like very much.  Great job!

Thank you so much, guys! In fact i'm still in the beginnings of understanding mixing/mastering more profound. So my knowledge is rather basic. Of course the mix has to be well balanced and solid. I always have a look at volumes, pannings, (stereo) placement, offset in depth etc. Before finalizing i'm often grouping similar tracks (eg Synths, Drums, Bass, Vocs) and then compressing and EQing this groups once again. And adding a limiter to catch peaks. But the essence is really EQing. Cutting all unheard frequencies in the low and high end and strengthening frequencies of each instruments while not overlapping each other too much. One technique i tend to forget but helps sometimes is layering (for example layering two kicks at the same time to get more punch). Another regular tip is to preserve a couple of db headroom for mastering. Then i'm rendering the stuff and make a new project for mastering.

Mastering itself was until now a 15 minutes thing for me:
Bus Compressor (usually Ableton's Glue Comp) - EQ - Multiband Compressor - Limiter.

I'm doing this with onboard plugins in Ableton most of the time but had my hands on iZotop's Ozone lately, which is great for mastering in my mind.

So you see, rather basic stuff.

And somehow it comes out sounding sooo crisp and clean when you do it, always in awe!
I basically go through the same process but most of the time have no idea what I'm doing big_smile
Maybe you could do a screencast or something someday of you mixing/mastering, really feel like there's a lot to learn from you!

Listening to it again, it's like the music is bursting out of the speakers and fills the room, awesome job smile

Excellent sound !!!

Thanks for the insight on your process! I work a bit like you up to the mastering, although I tried Ozone but didn't like it (which might have a lot to do with me not understanding some of it's features). I guess I should take more care of the mix.

This song is very complex (in a good way), don't know how you get this done in one week, the title fits the song very well, the sounds feel like they are shimmering

always a pleasure. my favorite in this one are the drums.

Good stuff! This track should be played at some underground club

I'm sure this is rule No. 1 big_smile

thank you so much, i'm feeling very honored. Even more when it comes from sooo talented guys like you!
But honestly, sometimes there is also luck involved in the process big_smile Not every material and mix is as good to master as the other.

There are so many people on youtube with much more knowledge (and educational skills) on this  than me, but if i feel bored anytime soon i'm thinking about making a screencast or something :-)
