Creature Funk

One of the first of a project with collaborator we're calling Creatures Once.
Live jam - drums (sadly only recorded with one mic), guitar and Ableton/Push (mostly some rhodes). Partner was tinkering with Push and tapped out a drum part, but we had the rhodes track armed at same time, so we got a part on both that synced and was kind of interesting. He took the session, converted all guitar and drums to midi tracks, converted guitars to piano parts, drums to various sampled kits, added a bassline or two then sliced everything into 2 - 8 bar clips, but didn't arrange much. I took the project back, made a few more clip edits to create the more straight forward hip hop beat parts in the very beginning and end. Then made an arrangement. I think there could be a few other edits/mixes that come out of this session.

This came up randomly on my playlist. Initially I was going to skip it by because I'm not a huge funk music person, but it was actually really engaging and I am enjoying it. You drew me in, good work! I really liked the part after the drum solo especially, that beat really resonated with me.

Thanks! Glad it drew you in. Maybe I'll have future title not say "funk", more open ended ... I think that beat you mentioned is my favorite too smile

Really digging the playing on this one--very funky.  I do have a few questions about the mix: a lot of the parts seem to have the high-end rolled off, and I'm hearing a bit of comb-filtering or phasing on the snare drum (which seems odd, since you only had one mic...but might be due to a parallel signal path somewhere in your send channels or something). Very nice playing and a funky jam.

Thanks for listening! I hear what you're saying about mix, not totally sure what happened with that high-end, need to go back and check, adjust. The snare in the beginning and end I think is what sounds like some phasing. After converting the recording to midi, one of the kits we put in was a "British Vintage" I think it's called .. ended up using a snare "press" sample which makes that kind or roll buzz/phased sound. Then there's a couple parts where the mix of two drum parts could be causing that I think.

this is pretty great

Danceable. It has a lot of swing.
Here comes a 70´s feeling together with modern components.
Great Work!
