Exit Signs - Week #28

Hot weather + new gear = basement studio bliss.

My Korg MS-20 Mini recently arrived, and with it comes new worlds of analog synthesis that I've only just begun to explore. This track contains the first of many experiments with this quirky instrument and I'm already quite pleased with the results. I recorded the bass line live while subtly tweaking the filter cutoff to give it some movement. Fun.

But lest we forget the intro melody provided by UVI's Mello (Mellotron-emulating) plug-in: A glorious retro sound that I can never get enough of, especially in the film scores I work on. This lofi, nuanced sound is complimented by a recording I captured by the back door of my house, with the house fan blowing and the sounds of summer creeping in from the yard. Glorious.

Finally, we full in the mix with some soft jazz brush drums, and a squelchy, echoing lead synth part from the tiny analog powerhouse that is the Korg Monotron Delay.

Key equipment/software used for production:

- Korg MS-20 Mini analog synth
- Korg Monotron Delay analog synth
- UVI Mello sample-based plug-in
- Novation V-Station synth plug-in
- Native Instruments Maschine Studio
- ValhallaDSP ValhallaRoom effect plug-in
