The Phantom Cabaret

By laguna on June 1, 2014 11:56 pm

This one's an update from a very old project dated around 2002-2004. Simple beats and some melancholic melody. Lot to do with the mix, I'm still not happy with it at all, but I posted the basc result.

UPDATE: I was deeply unsatified with the Weeklybeats version, so I ditched all the drums and went for the analog bass way, thanks to my new Arturia MicroBrute and some tape delay emulation (Boss RE20 Space Echo)...

PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS ONE:

Great reversed melody, nice chord changes. And the break/interlude. Looking forward to the Soundcloud version.

Diggin the reversed piano, too! The start of the snare about halfway through gives the track an additional push, i like it! Mix-wise, personally i think there's much going on in the mids. Maybe the mix would get a bit more fluffy if you try to thin them out and push the drums low- and highend and make them less boxy. But you know, it's always a matter of taste, too.

Btw. i thought on using some sounds of the youtube performances here on wb someday. I'll let you know smile

Hey, Guys! Thanks for listening, indeed!

I was deeply unhappy with my previous attempt, so I uploaded a new version to Soundcloud. I got rid of all the drums and tried to give it an atmosphere with analog bass loops.

Please have a listen to it if you have a moment. Cheers smile

The Soundcloud version is imho much much better! Synths are very present and meld very well with the mid-based piano. The definition in the hights is great. And despite the lack of drums i think the track has more tension now.

Huge step-up, congrats!

Thanks Perplex On! I took your advice about the mids and "wiped half of the piano" with a high pass filter heavily automated so it could let some bass in when needed.

I wanted to try some of your TWoG techniques [ The Wizard of Glitch wink ] but wasn't too confortable with the results so sticked to a heavy dubby delay all tweaked manually... Lots of takes

Again, thanks for listening and for the wise advice

Yes, the Soundcloud version is much better -- leaving the percussion for the very end. I already faved it, now I will download.

I like it.  I'm looking forward to listening to the Soundcloud version when I get home from work later.  My office still has an old version of Internet Exploder which is no longer compatible with Soundcloud.

Great beats and atmosphere. I like the processed piano. Well done!

Digging the reversed piano - nice with the attack smoothed out (I have always struggled with harshness of traditional piano) nice one.

i like the effect the mix takes on as the track progresses.  Dig the beat brought in towards the end and how it spins off smile  Nice job!
