Etude for Contrabass Flute & TI-83 Plus Calculator

By kineticturtle on September 21, 2014 2:27 pm

Well, 5 months in the making and a whole step too high, here finally is my Etude for Contrabass Flute & TI-83 Plus Calculator.

Calculator part written in HoustonTracker:

Contrabass Flute performed by Meerenai Shim (who's also in my band The Mineral Kingdom:

This is my Weekly Retrograde track for Week 15's "AAAAA" (http://weeklybeats.com/#/kineticturtle/music/aaaaa), only because that was when I originally wrote the damn thing, but a catastrophic memory leak bug destroyed all my work! In order to post this track I had to reprogram the song from scratch. I tried to use the microtonal capabilities of the calculator a bit, but I think that's an aspect of the instrument that will get more focused exploration in the future.

The juxtaposition of the organic contrabass flute with the synthetic calculator noises is really cool.  Can't say I've ever heard this particular combination of instruments before.  Nice stuff.

What a mind! Greatest combination ever!

Wow, that's pretty awesome! What a combo : )

I love the mix. Really interesting work !

Holy shit. A contrabass flute in a weeklybeat! Not something I expected to hear. Not at all! Bit of self-indulgence if you'll excuse it: http://australiancomposers.com.au/authors/vincent-giles, the pieces "Differing Dialogues", "Fragments", and "Fantasie Australis" all have parts for CBFl. Meerenai is a great promoter of new music too, which is always nice. This was so thoroughly enjoyable, and the mix with "chiptune" - fucking awesome.
