Colby Nolan

By Jim Wood on February 10, 2016 8:44 pm

Colby Nolan was a housecat who received an MBA from Trinity Southern University in 2004. When I read about him on the Wikipedia site "Animals with Fradulent Degrees," I immediately stopped work on my intended piece for this week and dragged my wife over to the studio to record the chorus vocals.

Peripheral referential thanks to Biber's "Die Katze."

Mac computer voices Fred and Kathy (chosen for their robotic phrasing); sung vocals Holly Wood. Trumpet and diffuse brass choirs derived from her voice via Melodyne Studio. Very approximately E Major.

Cool back story on this one and a cool track, too.  Dig that chorus.

great textures!

I want my cat to have a Princeton Degree... but then he will have even more attitude, which it seems almost impossible smile

Pretty innovative use of Melodyne and nice work on that textures and sound design, as usual

Princeton's overrated -- insist on MIT.

wow, surreal, trippy, off the wall, good!

This is absolutely wonderful. Great work, and great chorusing by Mrs Wood.

This is a beauty!

Awesome, loved reading through all the backstory. 'Animals with Fraudulent Degrees' sounds like an indie band name. I love it when subject matter can re-direct the whole creative process.

I wouldn't mess with that cat

Shit. What a track. I love it.

The Eb B Eb E Eb B motif is really good. Cat with Fraudulent Degree is a tough theme, but somehow you've nailed it.

Thanks for the apreciation!

You must have perfect pitch. Having a specific theme actually makes things easier :-))

I will love this song forever.

"In one case, a cat's degree helped lead to a successful fraud prosecution against the institution that had issued it." This is so unbelievable and hilarious. And the track is fantastic, truly unique.

Haha, this is lovely XD

I feel like I've been wandering in a street party in a Dali painting, serenaded by brass-playing, melting cats.  Bravo!

The song feels the same way about you.

Thanks all, from the melting cats!

Perfect song for my today's morning exercises which is sitting in a chair doing nothing except thinking about who might most probably call me today to tell me a surreal story. Very inspiring music. Muchas gracias.

Haha funny! Love the crunchy endings of the voice samples.

holy fug, with the silliness aside this is a solid track. At moments it sounded like caribou meets minimal techno. But those voices those! And the CATS CATS CATS!!!

I owe it all to Holly's voice (and Colby, of course) ;-)
