Forest Moon - Before Long

By george bowles on January 26, 2014 12:03 am

Forest Moon is sort of a studio project where I mostly use midi but sometimes electronic drums and guitar pedals to make soundtrack quality music, or attempt to anyway. paying attention to the process of making it sound good and work with a lot of production techniques.

so anyway, I used the provided free melody and ran it through some vst instruments and made a lot of layers, then I got carried away and came up with a piece that was over 20 minutes long, which I then made a short film for I guess lol! check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRWr1LBoEV0&feature=youtu.be .. the methodology was overlapping the midi file on itself and then giving it a variety of different midi instruments to trigger. at least in the video, I then made several iterations of variations, which kind of made the material to mutate if you watch the video.

the piece here I submitted was actually the final mix which ended up being sort of a representation of the different mutations I witnessed the melody to take with the different layers of effects I piled on to it. the end result is something crystalline and very synthesized as it was all virtual instrumentation, but it also sounds oddly natural in parts. the short film is a reflection on mortality and maybe a little spirituality. the film samples were creative commons and I am unaware of their original sources.

hmm got lost halfway through this one. There some weird compression going on in the middle passage that threw me off. when it kicks back in 3/4 in through it sounds fantastic.

Wow, nice layering and repetition. Very psychedelic!

Good work with the visuals also.  I feel similar to the above comment though.  I definitely enjoyed the tail ends the most smile

I'm not sure what the weird compression is, other than it may be caused by running many iterations of fx on processing on it. if anything to me it sounded kinda quiet, but I tend to mix louder than this. I agree that some parts sound more lush than others, but that was the intent. another possible compression thing could be caused by avocado glitch in Reaper. other than that, maybe I could work on the composition? fwiw, the mix sounds different in the video than on the track here, as they were mastered differently, etc.

Very nice hypnotic groove.  Kind of snuck up on me, and time stopped.

There is an odd kind of fuzziness to the loop at about 1/3 of the way through--could be degradation from compression, or something else?

not sure

like it!
