Took a walk

By drmindflip on March 18, 2014 1:36 am

Greetings to everyone! Hope a good week was had by all and that the (very) gradually-approaching spring is bringing some positive creative vibes to your music.

I'm astounded at how motivating it has been exchanging words with the community here and hearing so much excellent, challenging music. However, it is only natural that we experience ups and downs in the creative process - it was nice, in a weird way, to see so many of you here hinting at the onset of a slight weariness last week. Not that I wish such a thing on any of you, but when I saw the sheer quality of work that came out of self-professed 'tired' Weekly Beaters last week, I was amazed! Maybe it's okay for us to loosen our grip a little bit and let the music flow in different ways as the year marches on...

ANYWAY...here is a floaty, jazzy little stream for you all to paddle in - I hope you enjoy it smile

Took a walk:

I took a walk down the other side
To see what I could see
The flowers and trees all started to hide
There’s nothing here for me
The squirrels chatter like machine gun fire
And the moisture on my eyeballs started to freeze
Beneath the stones, the dead rattle their bones
But there’s nothing here for me.

So take a little break from your big mistakes
And live a life, for once, all of your own

Now I turn into a massive lung
And drink up the day
The trees all leap from the soil
And they leave a colossal empty space
Where seasons blend
Reason ends
Every corner, a friend
What kind of message is the world sending?
With robins on branches
Conspirators’ glances
Hypnotic red trances
And you
I nearly missed you

So take a little break from your bellyaches
And live a life, for once, all of your own

great piano and vocal noodling as usual smile

Absolutely love it dude, I find your tunes getting catchier each week, outdone yourself once again!

This one feels to me like someone took the best of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, and made a hybrid "Best of Mike Patton" type person-thing! big_smile

smile

The word 'noodling' is one that makes so much sense to me actually, I get it! Thanks a million smile

I guess we are all mutants made from the best bits (hopefully) of what we love...very flattering combination I must say! Thanks a lot man smile

Holy wow!! Hells bells, I certainly agree about this upward trend in catchiness ;-) And I do love the subtle nod/covert product placement in the presence of a certain Colossal Empty Space!! :-D

And yes, I did just hear that outro ... :-O

It's a combination of words that I just find quite lovely really smile   Thanks dude, I'm glad you enjoyed it - hope it gets head-stuck just as much as your offering this week is stuck in mine!

Oh geez. This is super good. Love the piano playing and all the chromatic runs. Lyrics are ace and everything else is dope!

Yes your songs are getting catchy! Also the riff at 1:31 is pretty much the Woody Woodpecker's laugh fyi!

So damn catchy sir - wonderful effort

And it's getting even better! I'm really impressed by your piano chops and voice work. The back vocals are really effective. I like that you let some space for the piano in places and do some short solo. Smart composition.

looooove the video!

"The squirrels chatter like machine gun fire." FTW. Well done, sir!

Much appreciated! Glad you enjoy the lyrics smile

Amazing pic choice as usual! Worth a thousand words... wink and wow, Woody brings me back - his laugh must be lodged in my brain somewhere!

I'm so glad to hear it - the songs seem to have a life of their own so it's often not up to me if they're catchy or not! smile

Thanks so much! I've honestly never thought of myself as a pianist - classical lessons/boredom did away with that and I never learned much at all - but comments like yours are really helping me embrace the keys, thank you!

Hehe thank you smile making the video is a whole new experience for me, but I think I'll try keep it up!

Specific feedback like this is so rewarding! I'm delighted the words spilling from my head bring some enjoyment big_smile thanks!

i just cant get enough of your chord progressions. so good.

this is really awesome dude! vocalist virtuoso! piano and progressions are sexy. definitely getting those mr. bungle vibes with those ba-bums towards the end, especially since they're harmonized with deeper vocals. i think that was actually my favorite part, though there's quite a lot to enjoy in this song.

i have to know (and maybe this is blasphemous but...) have you considered drums to your tracks? i feel like they might add a lot.

i'm getting around to listening a lil late this week, damn cold! Once again another awesome song you've done.  Noodling is def the word here, I love how the ending finishes with a triumphant theme as we saunter off into the sunset.  You consistently are writing interesting and well flowing lyrics that keep pace with all of your chord changes.  Man I wish I could sit down and learn some piano chops from ya.  Excellent work my friend! smile

Really don't know what to say, it's getting better and better each week! Outstanding talent AND skills. I would do crazy things to get a slice of these skills smile

AND thanks a lot for coming back and commenting each week, really keeps me going!

Ah thanks very much! I just kinda go with instinct but I've started learning a bit more theory just yesterday actually...will see what it turns out wink

Such a flattering and encouraging comment - thanks so much! You guys have really helped me embrace my voice and start messing with it a lot more big_smile
Nothing blasphemous at all - love to hear suggestions thanks! My first EP has 5 tracks recorded with a full band setup and drums - please do grab a copy (it's free!) if you fancy a listen. Me and some very talented friends of mine are going to record full versions of these tunes someday in the not-too-distant-future... smile

A wonderful tune. Also, I'm enjoying the videos, it is always fun to see performers performing.

Sorry to hear you were still wrestling with the cold while writing this - I'm a little late responding myself so hopefully this finds you in better form! I'm very grateful for your comments on the lyrics and flow in general. This is the first time I've ever really exposed stuff like this so readily and it is such a boost to hear of people (very, very musical people) enjoying what I write. Thanks a million big_smile

Really appreciate this dude! The feeling is very much mutual wink   And I'm starting to learn a little bit more every week thanks to your comments so what you're hearing back from me has a bit of your own input! And....

Thanks a lot Laohu! I have no video this week, but some possibly hilarious green screen stuff coming up soon... smile
