Week 10 (Newton)

By ConfettiTsunami on March 9, 2014 12:36 pm

This Track was made on the train to and from work on the OP1, I was trying to give across the idea of a train trundling along and added some field recordings of being inside the train for good measure.

All sounds made in OP1 then a quick mix done in Ableton live.

awesome! what do you like the most about the op1?

I'm still trying to work out how to use it properly. For me the main thing is I can work on music when I’m commuting to work without carrying round a laptop and in a way that feels as fun as when I’m in my studio. Secondly I like the way its causes happy accidents of creativity.

The Main thing I whish it had for me is the ability to slow down the Pattern sequencer in the same way you can with the endless sequencer but maybe up to 16 bars to create long evolving pads which I could then tweak whilst they were playing. To get around this on this track and several others I ran a midi sequence out of ableton into the OP1 on a loop  and then adjusted the synth parameters in the op to create the sounds. Unfortunately it requires me to use a computer which defeats the purpose so I hope they can fix that in an update.
Do you have an OP1? If so what do you like about it? Any tips on stuff you can do with it?

Also on a side note if you really want to hear what made me buy an op1 check out the artist Furry Hands His early albums are compleately on op1 and i love them.

i've been curious about the op-1 myself so that was a cool explanation.  It must be fun to have that along with you on the train ride.  I remember my commute into the city just being "ok whats on the iPod today" smile  Btw is that the actual train window view!? I'd stay on for more track goodness!  Nice track and thanks for the op-1 recommendation.

I wish that was my train commute, Unfortunately It’s allot wetter and colder. I took this picture whilst interrailing along the coast of France thought it suited the piece.
As for the OP1 I would say it’s not for everyone but if you like the sounds it creates I would highly recommend it. Yes it is expensive for what it technically is, but if you strip down most technology your realise it all is. The benefits of the OP1 are its community and its developer’s commitment to improving it. Every update something new and weird comes along that can create really interesting ideas. Especially there sequencers which I sometimes run via usb midi to other synths and just play with the pattern until something new comes out I can use as a basis on a new idea.
To people who say it’s just a toy I would agree with them. In the way that a good toy is fun and enjoyable to play with. I can’t see that being a bad thing, especially when staring at a VST on a screen can feel at times more like hard work then part of the creative process.
However if you were going to get one @Tone Matrix I would wait till boxing day as for the past 3 years they have been offering, between 40% and 50% discounts on them on their site which makes them a bit easier on the wallet.
