OZ TUMOR

By Christian Grey on February 5, 2016 5:10 am

Man, we (Kleie and I) wrote this song in the 90s sometime. At that time, it was based on a djembe beat. Times change. This is mostly lute, although I strayed from the path of no overdubs'n such. So there are multiple tracks and even a sequenced drum track (gasp!) don't worry it's just a bass drum. And I'm singing, obviously.

I messed around with Logic's Space Designer a little bit and was pleased with its speaker simulations. Not sure what Kleie originally did with my voice back in the day, but this comes close.

OZ TUMOR
Es sieht aus als würde ich fliegen
draußen Worte Farben Silben Bewegung
Bewegung

OZ RIA RIZ RAZOR
KA HOOR JEDI TUMOR
Hbf Rof 32 APPLE JEANS

In der Bewegung liegt die Ruhe
wie ein junges Kalb
schau ich hinaus und sehe gar nichts
weiter
immer weiter
immer weiter weg
weg noch von den letzten
weg

Almost looks like I'm flying
outside words colors syllables
motion
motion

OZ RIA RIZ RAZOR
KA HOOR JEDI TUMOR
Hbf Rof 32 APPLE JEANS

Stillness embedded in motion
like a young calf
I'm looking outside seeing nothing
going on
always going on
away from the last ones
away

Mmmmmm clearly some angsty deep lyrics here. The OZ refers to Hamburg's most famous graffiti artist
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oz_(Sprayer)
He was Hamburg's most prolific sprayer, also mentally ill, in and out of psych units and jail apparently, could not stop spraying.

The other tags were graffitis I saw from my commute in the S-21 every day. OZ tags were not unlike a tumor before the guy died. Somewhere there must be a picture of me on a stage in HH, wearing a big ol' "OZ is art" shirt. Props to OZ, still.

Any of my fellow Americans who have ever said that German doesn't sound beautiful because of all the gutturals has clearly never heard you sing.  This is fantastic.

Beautiful song and lyrics. Fascinating to learn a bit more about graffiti subculture.

I love your music!  Also, the graffiti I've seen in Germany was amaaaaazing.

Haha, thank you -- that's definitely one of my pet peeves when people say Oh German can never sound poetic, or subtle, or romantic, or whatever. Glad you liked it!

Thank you both! I find graffiti oddly calming, plus it's such an amazing proof of passion -- you can't just design your tag, you just gotta go out there and spend the night with physical (and illegal) labor. Almost old-fashioned!

Ich liebe die Deutsche Sprache. Wish your voice was a bit more up front.

Yeah... in hindsight and when listening to it with proper speakers, I should have mixed a little different, and made the whole track louder. Thanks Jim!

yeah! Great version of this! Put it up on splice please. I agree, the vocals could do with a bit more direct sound. Maybe a pre-delay for the effect.

And I want to add, that Oz was actually killed by a S21 commuter train whilst spraying....

Stunning, really! It feels like post-psychedelic interlude on an album.

Wunderschönes Lied. Effekt auf der Stimme
ist super so. Gitarre und das Solo genial.
In der Bewegung liegt die Ruhe....!!!!

Beautiful, delicate piece here!  I'm really enjoying the processed vocal and lute on this.

Christian, you really have a great voice. I'm really happy to listen to some vocals in your music again.

The track is really beautiful, and reminds me of the story of "Muelle",one of our graffitti pioneers here in Madrid. He also died young and left a strong legacy in the city
