Upon Completing This Track I Learned of Philip Seymour Hoffman's Death

By Chris Dotson on February 2, 2014 8:12 pm

The gear used this week was my current standard set-up:

  1. Samplr iPad app w/ homemade samples

  2. Korg EMX w/ two parallel guitar fx chains (reverb & compression/distortion)

  3. Korg MS2000

This track was made by editing together a number of live recordings right from my mixer into Ableton. There is very little post-processing except for a bit of reverb and compression on the back end.

Also, this track is part of Theme Week 5 which was to make a track using anything other than 4/4 time. Since my last rhythmic track was in 15/16, I felt that I could be a little simpler this week. This track is either in 12/16, 6/8, or 3/4 - depending on how your ears hear it. ... FWIW, I hear 6/8.

... ...

While listening to this track one last time and trying to think of an appropriate title, I learned of the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. This has fucked me up more than I would have expected, and the only consolation is that I made a track this week that feels about as angry as his death makes me.

Really lovely track. Yes, PSH is a very, very sad event. I woke up to the news and it was a very unpleasant way to wake up.

very very sad news indeed. he was originally from my home city. great track, though.

Very enjoyable track once again.  I like that super scratchy sound.  Really cuts in the mix!

Excellent dark angry ambient track, terrible news.
