Take Flight

A friend of mine passed away suddenly a few weeks ago. He was the guy who introduced me to doing music. We used to listen to terrible dance music together and he used to come up with cool experimental sounds with hardware synthesizers. I busted out the hardware synth for him. He’d probably call this super cheesy.

Farewell Dave, keep safe, have a grand journey.

Sunday, Apr 3,  I finished my previous week’s song a bit early so technically I have 3 hours to go before I can start.

Songs from this week:

Oasis - Wonderwall
Varien - Valkyrie

VI - V - I - vi (??) Hmm. Maybe not…

In the end, I didn’t do anything in this time and ended up not really using many of these notes.

Monday, Apr 4. 10:00 - 10:40. Deleting and starting over. Of course. Not really sure what I want to do, I may do some cheese in honor of my friend Dave. He never really composed cheese himself, but he sure enjoyed some cheesy 2000’s era trance.

Tues, Apr 5. 8:30 - 10:30 PM. Uplifting send-off music, because sometimes we need this.

Wed. Apr 6. 8:00 - 9:00 PM. Filling in the song parts, thickening, some minor mixing.

Thu. Apri 7, 7:30 - 8:00 PM; 8:45 - 9:00 PM (around 45 minutes). Adding more structure, starting second verse/chorus.

Fri Apr. 8, 10:15 - 10:22 PM. Doing what I can in 15 minutes!

Sat. Apr 9, 10:15 - 11:45 AM. Adding an outro and completing the second chorus. I don’t think this is really in the spirit of what I wanted to create initially. I would normally start over again but it’s a bit too late for that. Better luck next week.

Sun. Apr 10, 10:00 - 11:20 AM. Finishing touches. Redid a few audio parts and thicked up some stuff. Mixing/EQing.

Total time: 7h 7m. This is about an hour longer than most weeks. I don’t know if the result is much better than the other songs I’ve done, but I think this one has a slightly different feeling than most of the songs I’ve done this year.

Sorry about your friend. Interesting choice not leading with more epic unison synths, that's like the first thing I think of with cheesy 2000s EDM, but I like it, it is unique.

Thanks. About unison synths (super saws come to mind!) I thought about it, NickC but he really liked that analog sound so I had to put more of that into the song rather than the real Four on the Floor trance cheese. I recorded from my Mono Evolver Keyboard for this one, it's the only analog synth I have.

A few weeks ago on a weeklybeats is a long time, struck me as odd is all. It's a nice song, I don't know Dave, but I'm digging it.

I found out on March 27, which is now two and a half weeks ago. It took a little bit of time to process. Since he was a hardware synth junkie it kind of revived my interest in hardware, and now I'm learning a lot more about it again. I think being more comfortable with weekly songwriting, guitar recording and audio in general has started to make it all "click" so to speak.
